I was looking for a medium priced home cinema systems to go with my 42" Samsung TV and Sky. It arrived two days after placing my order and following the instructions I soon had it up and running. The calibration feature is great and resulted in a good surround sound. My only concern was a lack of audio in. A quick call to Sony suggested that I connect the HDMI and the Scart connector. Hey presto, it works great. The sub woofer has the lounge (and my neighbours)shaking and during a battle scene I was constantly ducking the bullets coming from behind.

All in all a good value from money system and what we have come to expect from a company like Sony.

This system certainly does what it says on the tin. I'm not a particularly technical person and an old duffer too but I eventually managed to find my way around the somewhat unstructured manual.
Another reviewer mentioned that you cannot alter the tone and I suppose that is true in the sense that there is no specific control of the tone. However,if you manually play around with the volume from the speakers (as opposed to the auto calibration which is easy but gives you what Sony thinks is best)you can alter the tonal quality. By increasing or decreasing the volume of the sub-woofer compared to the others, you will almost certainly get the tonal quality you want but the manual does not explain that at all.
I'm giving it only 4 stars because, like so many gadgets nowdays, it is just too clever by half. Sony (and the rest)need to recognise that not everyone is technically literate and that many of us just want a simple system that gives good quality sound and picture so that we can enjoy the films/TV or music rather than spend time fiddling with the system itself.
But it's good nonetheless. Well done Sony but try to make some of your products less complex.

I was impressed 26 July 2007
After my last 5.1 system died I bought this system. The HDMI upscaling picture has impressed me and the sound out of the default setup sounds great. I couldn't tell much difference either calibrated or not. I was concerned over the lack of phono input so I wasn't sure if I could get the sound from my TiVo through the 5.1 system but a simple purchase of a phono to scart converter and plugging that into the Scart socket allows me to have HDMI video DVD picture and run all my TV sound through the 5.1 speakers too. All in all, a very impressive system for it's price!
