I was looking for a medium priced home cinema systems to go with my 42" Samsung TV and Sky. It arrived two days after placing my order and following the instructions I soon had it up and running. The calibration feature is great and resulted in a good surround sound. My only concern was a lack of audio in. A quick call to Sony suggested that I connect the HDMI and the Scart connector. Hey presto, it works great. The sub woofer has the lounge (and my neighbours)shaking and during a battle scene I was constantly ducking the bullets coming from behind.

All in all a good value from money system and what we have come to expect from a company like Sony.

This system certainly does what it says on the tin. I'm not a particularly technical person and an old duffer too but I eventually managed to find my way around the somewhat unstructured manual.
Another reviewer mentioned that you cannot alter the tone and I suppose that is true in the sense that there is no specific control of the tone. However,if you manually play around with the volume from the speakers (as opposed to the auto calibration which is easy but gives you what Sony thinks is best)you can alter the tonal quality. By increasing or decreasing the volume of the sub-woofer compared to the others, you will almost certainly get the tonal quality you want but the manual does not explain that at all.
I'm giving it only 4 stars because, like so many gadgets nowdays, it is just too clever by half. Sony (and the rest)need to recognise that not everyone is technically literate and that many of us just want a simple system that gives good quality sound and picture so that we can enjoy the films/TV or music rather than spend time fiddling with the system itself.
But it's good nonetheless. Well done Sony but try to make some of your products less complex.

After my last 5.1 system died I bought this system. The HDMI upscaling picture has impressed me and the sound out of the default setup sounds great. I couldn't tell much difference either calibrated or not. I was concerned over the lack of phono input so I wasn't sure if I could get the sound from my TiVo through the 5.1 system but a simple purchase of a phono to scart converter and plugging that into the Scart socket allows me to have HDMI video DVD picture and run all my TV sound through the 5.1 speakers too. All in all, a very impressive system for it's price!

Had this delivered yesterday after setting it up and reading the manual i decided to set it up via a HDMI connection the results are outstanding the best picture i have ever seen from a DVD. The 5.1 and DTS sound are out of this world overall its better than going to the cinema.

Ignore the previous review about poor sound i found no fault with it, it seems to me the person did not read the manual properly also you can adjust the sound and bass to the speakers.

For the price and the HDMI connection this is the best value Home Cinema you can buy today.

So my advice? go and buy it.

The package arrived very quickly (Hughes Direct). Initially I was a little disappointed that the subwoofer was on the light side, but having played several dvds I am extremely pleased with the overall sound and picture quality (I have a Samsung lcd tv) - exactly as you would expect from a Sony system and great for the low price! It was easy to install and is easily calibrated if you want more bass or to adjust volume to any one speaker. I couldn't give it five stars since it does not have any digital audio input that I can connect to my cable box. I have several devices connected together and had to purchase an audio switcher to utilise the one 3mm stereo input (on the front) for my cable box and pc (note that no cables are included). All in all, for this price it's a great buy!

The DAV230 sounds great with action movies and I think is very good value for money. The manual is not the easiest to follow however. I have seen a number of comments re connectivity with this model, particularly lack of audio in. I sorted this by using the HDMI cable as the video source (between the DAV and TV) and then getting a switchable Pure scart to audio converter for £12 - plugged the scart end into the DAV and then right and left audi channel cables from the scart (DAV) end to the TV where I plugged the audio cables into audio out on the TV (Sony 3020). It now works a treat. I have been able to keep the two scarts I have on the TV for sky and my DVD recorder and use the HDMI/audio/Scart cable for the connectivity between the TV and DAV (If you only use the HDMI cable you will only get sound through the DAV when watching DVD's and not the TV). This allows me to play everything including the TV through the DAV and also pressing the Theatre button on the TV remote control switches the DAV on automatically!

I bought this theatre system for my home lounge where I have sky+ and a sony bravia LCD TV. Installation was easy and even in my small lounge i have set the speakers up in favourable positions. Sound quality is very good for the price and it can really belt out the decibells when asked to do so.

I was a bit concerned about the size of the subwoofer at first, as it is a bit of a beast, but it does fit quite snugly next to my TV stand and as a benefit its power does match the size. The reason I am only giving it 4 stars because the system is not very versatile.

My first gripe is availability of sound input, as the DVD player only comes with 1 SCART socket, and so, with ordinary sky+, i can either wire it up to play TV (i.e. HDMI and SCART direct to TV) or the sky (SCART going through the sky box). since ordinary sky boxes do not come with an HDMI port (and I have no intention of making the expensive leap to sky HD just yet), it is not possible to get both at the same time, and no amount of fiddling with the settings seems to change this. This is a small problem, since I don't use the built-in decoder much anyway.

My second and final gripe is that although I knew before making my purchase that the DVD player was region 2 only, I found out whilst reading the instruction booklet that all versions of this model, with the exception of UK and US models are multi-region. Although agreed I was not expecting a multi-region player, it does leave somewhat a bitter taste.

All in all, I am happy with my purchase, and I firmly believe that, for the price, you can't go far wrong with this setup.
