The new D-NF600S ATRAC CD WALKMAN combines all the benefits of a Sony CD WALKMAN with playback of ATRAC and MP3 compressed music, along with a built in digital FM/AM tuner. While ATRAC compression technology keeps offering the benefit to pack 30 CD's worth of music onto 1 CD-R/RW, significant improvements in compression bitrates have allowed the user to compress music with a sound quality level very near to original CD. On top of that, the new PC music jukebox functionality allows users to easily rip their CD's, buy and download music from the Internet, create their own playlists and burn directly to CD-R.

Major leaps forward have been made in ATRAC technology, the compressed audio format which Sony originally developed for MiniDisc ten years ago and which lies at the heart of Sony's Network Audio devices. The ATRAC3plus format has extended its bitrate compression rates from 48- and 64- to also 256kbps, delivering playback quality that is very close to original CD. All ATRAC CD WALKMAN models feature a parametric equalizer to allow users to fine-tune the tone of their sound. All models come with SonicStage 2.0 software.

    The sound quality of this unit is very disappointing. Even at full volume with the volume limiter turned off and the tone settings at max it sounds "tinny" and cheap. Also, the unit is hardly user friendly with a confusing system of jog wheels and mini toggles to set the sound quality etc. Like a previous reviewer I also found the radio virtually useless unless you are outdoors and holding it up in the air!
    If you are looking for a decent CD player with FM tuner then the Philips AZT9500 is far better value. At about one third the price of the Sony it may be more bulky and less stylish but it has a punchy sound, decent radio reception and some normal buttons to push.

    Really it deserves more stars for the Atrac functionality, but being sold with a radio means it must be judged as a fully working package.

    I've had to return 2 units as the FM doesn't work if it's in any kind of building (2 feet from a window in one case, in another test, in a large department store ,the unit had to be pressed against the glass to get any kind of signal, in yet another case it wouldn't work in a car - all were different units) .

    Buy a separate Atrac MP3 player from Sony and a separate small (Roberts?) portable Radio. You can get both for virtually the same price, and you'll have items performing functions for which they were designed.

    Shame as it's a nice idea to have two together.

    The Atrac CD facility is great but I am afraid I have had a problem with the FM facility on 2 units.
