The Sony D-NE511 looks like any other CD player; there are numerous buttons on the front, a two-line LCD screen and the usual d-pad for playing skipping and stopping the tracks. Although in reality this is far from the truth as the CD player has the ability to play both standard audio CDs and specifically burned CDR/RWs. Using Sony's proprietary PC software, SonicStage Simple Burner and a CD writer on your PC, tracks can be burned on a CD-R/RW using either Sony's ATRAC3plus or ATRAC3 formats.
Taking either CD or MP3 files, tracks can be compressed by up to 1/20th of there original size depending on the quality setting you chose. Music can be burned and compressed to 132, 105, 66, 64 or 48 kbps (kilobits per second) and compressing at 48 kbps, will allow you to record up to 490 songs (about 30 CDs) on a single 700Mb disc. Track information is provided via an internet connection to Gracenote CDDB before burning and this information will then appear on the LCD display when you play the track.
Sound obviously varies according to the level at which you record it. CD-quality MP3s are normally recorded at 128kbps and at this ratio you are still able to get some 170/180 tracks per CD--slightly more than the 13 or 14 you normally find. The unit is powered by two "AA" type batteries and will run for around 50 hours. And for the fashion-coconscious the player comes in three different colours: blue, red and silver.
While the device's reliance on Sony will be annoying to some, it doesn't take away the fact that you've got a great music player that produces very good music for a very affordable price. --Jason Denwood

Music Lover's Dream,
By
This review is from: Sony D-NE511 Red ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkman (Electronics)
A revelation in music portability. I am a music lover and can't really conceive of not having music on for any extended length of time. For this reason - One album of music is simply not enough. As a result I ended up taking at least 6 or 7 CD's with me all the time. (BULKY to say the least) I moved on to MD - very good. (4 CD's on an MD so 3 MD's is 12 CD's) Recently I heard about ATRAC CD players. I bought this one. What a revelation : Pro's 1. Up to 30 CD's on a CDr/RW (reduced quality sound - not too bad though) I have used the ATRAC3+ format and have between 19 and 22 CD's on each CD-R/RW The quality is indistinguishable from the original through my Sennheiser headphones. That is over 220 tracks. That is about 21 hours of CD quality music on a SINGLE CD. That is about 19GB - which is better than a 15GB ipod - and you can have 5 CD's with you of 19GB each. I have 3 to 5 CD's with me at any one time - that is 60 to 100 CD's. (Plus my original CD cases don't get mashed up because I am carrying them round all the time) 2. Sound quality. 3. Size/Looks : It is small and quite flat and looks GREAT. (I have the RED one - it does turn heads!!) 4. The jog dial and Menu's - From heaven. 5. It can import play-lists from Musicmatch. A boon if you use MP3 and have playlists you like. 6. The Simple Burner software is very simple - 7. Can fwd and rev through ATRAC and MP3 tracks - most other players cannot do this. 8. Battery life : 50 hrs. Cons : 2. Start up time with lots on Cd is about 20-30 secs. Can't really think of any other cons. Verdict : For a music lover - a near-Perfect machine. A QUALITY PRODUCT for those who need MUCH more than 1 hour's quality music.

Well i recieved this player today and i have to say it was money well spent. The Player is a nice shade of red and very eye catching. What was most important though has to be the sound though, and that was amazing, at first i was a little taken back by the low volume even when set to max but after a quick consultation with the instruction manual, i realised that Sony had implemented a audio volume limiting system which surpresses the volume obviously as the name entails. The good thing was that this AVLS can be easily turned off, and to do so you have only got to hold on to the sound button until the words 'AVLS OFF' flashes on the lcd screen.I created a MP3 cd with 186 songs all at roughly 196kbs and the loading was of no problem, no more than 10-20 seconds. the lcd display is also of good use though you would have to press the display button sometimes to get the full ID of the song. The jog dial system is ingenious and makes life so much easier when browsing through a huge selection of mp3s, by turning the dial to the right you go down the list and to the left, up the list, pressing in the dial (not the clear plastic bit) you can load a song instantly. Overall this player was definitly worth the price tag especially considering its price. This is one player that will bring hours of quality music all in just one cd!

This CD PLayer really is just as good as they say it is, it provides the user with ease in using the burning program. the CD player itself has excelent sound quality, i myself have previouosly owned 7 CD Walkmans in the last 5 years and this one comes out by far as being the best, i once had the Nike CD/MP3 player just releases but took it back after only few weeks, it was bulky and poor in sound quality, in contrast to this player it was nothing, this CD Walkman is by far the best product of Sony's accomplishments and so many songs can be stored onto one CD so there is no messing around with swapping and changing CD's while on those rickidy bus journeys to work! WELL DONE SONY and of course keep up the good work Amazon Team :)
