Great bargain with CD Text--if you get another remote for it, 22 May 2002
This review is from: Sony D-EJ835 Silver CD Walkman (Electronics)
This is a great player, which is considerably hampered by the excuse for a remote control Sony have shipped with it. The remote has an LCD on it which displays track number and elapsed time, and that's about it. It doesn't even have a pause button. On the unit is another LCD, which only displays track and elapsed time. The manual warns you off using any other remote control with the unit. However, I also have a Sony MZ-R900 MD recorder, which comes with the RM-MC11EL remote, which has the same jack plug. If you plug this into the 835, all of its features work--pause, volume, program, even the electro-luminescent backlight. Not only that, the remote displays remaining track time and remaining disc time--and, wait for it--CD Text! It also gets the unit's LCD to display remaining time--something you can't get the unit itself to do! This is typical Sony--I thought it highly unlikely that they would produce more than one remote controller chip, all they do is limit the buttons on the remote. So I'm very happy with the unit, but I would've been less than happy if I hadn't had an MD remote. 5 stars for the player (sound quality is great and it even lets you turn off the annoying beeping you get by default with every button press and while paused), 0 stars for Sony for packaging such a useless remote with it.

My Own Music, 7 Mar 2002
This review is from: Sony D-EJ835 Silver CD Walkman (Electronics)
The D-EJ835 is one of the most robust yet affordable mid-to-high range Poratable CD Players that I've the pleasure to use. Sony have surpassed the orignal D-EJ-735 design by adding a CDR/RW playing feature, thus giving you the ability to play your own home-burnt CD's with your preferred mixes away from your PC. For once sony have come up with a decent set of colours for the hardware, their 'Blue' is a rather pleasant mid-deep blue, not garish or shiny (unlike the previous model's in the electric-green). Playback features via the new 'stick' style in-line remote control are easy to use. For people who use the supplied Rechargable batteries you'll be pleased to know that dual-charge-and-play feature using an external 'battery-case' is now standard, so you can recharge your internal batteries from the mains and play using a second external set. The jog feature allows for a reasonable fast-walking pace, or car/bus journeys without skipping. A nice piece of equipment which I'm going to keep for a while.

this is a fab CD player. the reviews above have got it pretty much covered - great sound quality, jog proof really is jog proof, its all good. the remote is not as bad as made out. it doesnt have a pause because it doesnt need one - if u hit stop, it will turn the player off, if you then hit play, it will turn back on, and continue playin just where u left off, just as though it was paused, but energy saving. You can use the optical out as a second headphone jack socket, although you can't control the volume, its still handy. The playback is huge a good 30-40 hours with the recharageabe batteries it comes with, plus an extra 20 hours or so with the add on pack, also included. a fab package!
