4.0 out of 5 stars RELIABLE, 30 Dec 2002
This review is from: Sony D-E221 ESP MAX CD Walkman (Electronics)
I bought this player a while ago, and it was not bad value for money back then. It has all you need, all of the basic functions etc. It has never had any problems, so therefore i can safely say that, for me this is the perfect portable cd player. Sony is rightfully well trusted, however the esp shock protection is not really needed: i have knocked the player off a table, and it just kept on playing (without esp on). The most important things for me are play time on 2 batteries and sound quality, and this player fulfils these requirements beautifully. The only problem i have is that this, (and all) portable cd player is big, and this led to my purchase of the MZN707 minidisc player. Since then i have never looked back.

Still, if its a cd player you want, then this is the perfect choice for you. I hope this was of help.

5.0 out of 5 stars no complaints, 10 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony D-E221 ESP MAX CD Walkman (Electronics)
I literally have no complaints after a year of use, and finding fault is one of my talents.

The price was low, so I did not expect much. However, I was very surprised. I soon discovered that the ESP feature is nearly useless, as one must try very hard indeed to make the player skip even with ESP disabled.

With a pair of 1600 mAh NiMH batteries, I can go for more than a week with several hours of daily use. In fact, I think that the batteries self discharge faster than I can use them up. I often forget to keep another pair charged, because they are needed so infrequently.

Once the included headphones have fallen apart (I've never seen a pair included with anything that didn't) and been replaced, one finds that the sound is excellent, especially the bass. I suspect one would have to use a pair of those big raver-phones to be able to distinguish the sound from that of a much more expensive player.

While the player does not look very durable, I have fallen on mine multiple times with no ill effects. The only visible damage mine has are the tiny scratches and worn buttons that accumulate from constant use.

I have great respect for the player and the people that designed it. Instead of doing everything, it sticks to the basics and does them with a level of excellence I don't think I have ever seen before. That is very difficult to find these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Max performance!, 16 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony D-E221 ESP MAX CD Walkman (Electronics)
The Sony D-E221 is an excellent CD player, and gives you the main benefits from G-Protection while being less pricey. It does the most important things very well indeed: clean audio with good bass weight, and the 'MAX' protection really does work well (you'd have to bounce this player off walls before it'll skip!). One minor quibble is that although the headphones supplied do produce a very detailed sound, they will distort with bass heavy tracks easily if you crank up the volume - a problem with most headphones supplied with personal CD players. For the sum of it's parts this cd player represents excellent value for money and probably sounds better than any other player at this price: one to top anyone's shortlist.
