Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The W220 gives you incredible technology in an easy to use package. Its features include 12.1 megapixel resolution, a large 2.7" LCD screen, a 30mm wide angle lens, a 4 x optical zoom, and some of the most innovative and exciting photographic technology available from Sony. You can look forward to the power of a BIONZ processor, Intelligent Scene Recognition and Optical SteadyShot. The W220 is ideal for those who want to take their photography to the next level.

The power to catch every scene
The W220 contains the powerful BIONZ processor, which enhances image quality by handling large amounts of digital information at high speed. This reduces image noise and enables a faster shooting response. It is also fitted with Vario–Tessar lenses made by Carl Zeiss, the world renowned optical specialists. These premium lenses are highly rated by photographers for their colour precision, superb contrast and extremely low distortion levels at all focal lengths. The huge 12.1 effective mega–pixel resolution gives you the capability to make high quality images which maintain detail even when enlarged. The W220 also has a 30mm wide angle lens to allow you to make the most of panoramic scenes as well as indoor scenes featuring groups in tight spaces.

Optical SteadyShot uses a sensor to prevent hand shake blurring pictures

Optical SteadyShot to reduce picture blur
If you are shooting with the camera in your hand, there is always a danger of handshake spoiling your picture, even if your subject is stationary. Optical Steady Shot is an intelligent image stabiliser from Sony which uses a gyroscopic sensor to rapidly change the position of the lens inside the camera if it detects camera shake. The results are crisp, razor sharp photos even in poorly lit rooms. This feature is especially important when zooming in on a subject, because the smallest shake shows up when a subject is far away.

Intelligent Scene Recognition lets you concentrate on the subject
This simplifies shooting by automatically choosing the best settings for your shot from Portrait, Macro, Landscape, Twilight, Portrait, Backlight Portrait and Backlight. This is particularly useful when you don’t have time to set your camera manually in awkward lighting conditions. The Anti–Blink mode prevents closed eyes spoiling otherwise good compositions.

Enhanced Face Detection helps you keep your portraits in focus
Face Detection is very handy for shooting larger groups and scenes where faces might get lost against a detailed background. The sensor recognises faces as faces and automatically adjusts the exposure, white balance and flash settings to show skin tones at their best. Up to 8 faces can be recognised in any scene and you can even set priority for children or adults.

Enhanced Smile Shutter captures every smile
Ever had a portrait or party scene shot spoiled because your subject wasn’t smiling when the shutter clicked? Then you’ll appreciate the W220’s Smile Shutter function. In Smile Shutter mode the camera automatically takes a picture when it detects a smile, so your friends and family always look their best. You just click an icon to set the level of smile required and the camera does the rest. You can interrupt Smile Shutter by pressing the shutter button at any point if a shot looks interesting. You can also instruct it to only shoot when one of several faces is smiling. You can even set a priority for children or adults.

High sensitivity sensor for low light
Look forward to stunning images taken even when the natural light is not at its best. The BIONZ sensor on the W220 is calibrated to a high ISO of 3200, making it highly sensitive to any light available. Higher sensitivity enables faster shutter speed and so also reduces the blur on images, even in low light conditions.

Retouch shots on the move
If you can want to improve your shot right there and then, you can even perform simple retouching operations in camera without needing to download the image to your PC — such as cropping, altering exposure or removing red–eye. You can also make the most of the W270’s 2.7" Clear Photo LCD screen by using it for playback as well as scene composition. It’s big enough to be viewed by more than one person, and the camera even allows you to add a music soundtrack and other fun effects so you can put on a real slideshow. Back at home, the W270 has an HD output too to allow you to show your still images at their best on an HD TV screen (optional cable required).

It’easy to track down photos with landscapes, people or smiles, thanks to PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software

PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software
Managing your growing photo collection is hugely simplified by this software which comes free with the W220. Just install it on your PC and it provides a perfect archive for your shots which are all just a click or two away. You can arrange them by date, by person, and even search through them quickly. From here you can burn them to discs, send them to friends or upload them to sites in a matter of seconds.

I bought the Sony W220B as a smaller alternative to my Canon SLR and as a replacement for my Sony P10 5.2MP which I bought some five years ago (excellent camera, but rather small screen).

The W220B is 12.1MP. Personally, I think 12.1MP is too much and the difference in image quality compared to the P10 (which has less than half the amount of pixels) is negligible. But the price of memory has plummeted and a 4GB memory card (good for 800 pictures at 12.1MP) can now be had for around £15. Photos can also be easily converted to VGA for email (as 12.1MP is too big).

The main reason for the purchase was to get a bigger screen (the Sony 2.7" has 230k resolution, the same as my Canon 3" SLR) and for an improved range of features. And the new features are what makes this camera stand out. Shoot in the `P Mode' and you will get Continuous Shooting, Exposure Bracketing and `Steady Shot' Image Stabilisation, all found on the bigger SLR cameras.

In fact, I found the `P Mode' to be good for 90% of all photos. The Intelligent Scene Recognition is decent (select in Auto Mode) and covers a lot of low-light shots and the `Smile Shutter Mode' is a nice touch. A bit disappointing was the `ISO Mode'. I found images to be (perhaps unsurprisingly) quite high on noise. I think the `P Mode' actually produces the best results for most low-light stuff.

Bad Points? Build quality is not quite as good as previous Cybershots (Mode dial bit flimsy) as a growing trend is to make Sony products in China (not Japan, like P10). At this price however it's hard to complain. The `Movie Mode' no longer offers a trim function (even my mobile phone does this now) to edit videos and the P10 had this. That said, movie quality is a massive improvement.

So in short, an excellent camera hot on features for both the enthusiastic and casual user. A 6MP SLR would still beat it hands down for image quality but as a P&S the W220B does the job nicely.

I had been wanting a Sony digital camera for a long time but with only a student loan to survive on I decided on purchasing the Canon A470 from Argos whilst it was on sale over Christmas. I knew it wasn't the camera for me after removing it from it's packaging, mainly because of it's size and weight. Now don't get me wrong the Canon A470 is a great camera and takes excellent quality photos but for me it just wasn't compact enough, mainly due to it taking AA batteries, which it would use up extremely quickly. This was subsequently sold and replaced with camera number two, the Sony T70. Again I knew the Sony T70 was not the camera for me. Firstly it had a touch screen which made it A.difficult to navigate the functions and B. the screen's picture quality was poor compared to a standard non touch screen.

Now we come to the Sony W220B, I bought this camera (after returning the T70) for my trip to the USA. My main requirements were, a compact design with easy functions and excellent quality photos, which the Sony W220B fulfills. The camera has a fantastic battery life, which can be easily charged in the charging dock provided. So far I have taken all manner of different photos i.e close ups, long distant, night, with and without flash and even videos, all of which look fantastic. As for uploading, the speed is really impressive, the photos load on to my iPhoto in minutes. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone and I would also advise that if you know what camera you would like but are unsure about spending a little extra on it, just get it because it will save a lot of faffing about in the long run, plus you'll treasure it for as long you as you have it.

Fabulous camera with excellent results being 12.1MP! Great for carrying around in your pocket for those impromptu photos!
The screen size is more than adequate and the controls are easy to use - even for my 80 year old Dad!Everything seems very straight forward and the end results are crisp and well defined images.
A great camera in its class.

Hate it
The Canon Ixus is a much better camera. This camera can't cope with dim lighting and is constantly over exposed. You are paying for the Sony name and not a quality camera. Read more
