5.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously good 25 May 2012
Colour Name:Black
Hugely surprised aboutt he quality of this camera, having just got it about 3 days ago. Have taken shots in the day, in rooms, in the sun (yes it finally appeared this week!) and shots from last night eating dinner till dusk. All the pictures are of a very high quality, and the low lights shots are, as the title says, ridiculously good. I've never seen such good night shots, and with no flash and very very little light, the wizardry inside this baby makes everything crystal clear. The size if great - fits in a cigareete packet so I heard, and low-and-behold it actually does.

The one thing I was really worried about from 'critic reviews' was the screen, apprently too small and crappy in different light conditions... well as a real user of this in plenty of conditions and the screen is great. I literally don't know what they are on about. I was trying to figure out if to go to the 100 or 150 (which has a bigger screen), but having checked them both out in a sony store I thought the 100 was enough, turns out it was - and I'm someone who has multiple cameras (GoPros, DSLRs) so I'm fairly picky.

Effects are brilliant - illustration mode is a shopstopper - people love this. Colour filters works really well. Video is high quality, slow and fast pans, movement is blur-free as far ar as I've seen at 1080i 50fps. This new sensor in this camera is a world advanced above CCD sensors that practically all other cameras seem to use, the great thing is you just point and shoot and the results are very high quality, so no faffing is needed.

I spent probably 2 weeks looking at loads of point and shoots, resaerching literally everything. I even ended up learning how a CCD sensor works... too much info! In the end I chose the lightest smallest camera - the opposite end of the scale of what I was originally looking at - and yes I know its only 3 days in but I've tested it a lot and I think this easily has to stand as one of the best purchases I've ever made. One very happy customer..!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful small form camera 23 July 2012
By Paul S. Ell HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If you're looking for a very small and lightweight point and shoot camera this new Sony model may well be for you.

I'm probably being a little unfair in calling it point and shoot. It has an impressive range of features, probably the most significant of which is a 10 times optical zoom lens. Sony have achieved a feat of engineering to build in to a thin camera a zoom lens that almost magically extends from the camera body. Sony claim that the camera is the lightest and thinnest 10x zoom available on the market.

Other features, all accessible via a menu system that serves as the digital view finder on the back of the camera, are fairly intuitive although you'll need to be a keen photographer to both understand and appreciate some of the options. But a built in manual is included with the camera which will help many. In essence both aperture and exposure time can be set manually giving you complete flexibility. For those less familiar with the more technical features there's a couple of fully automatic settings which really do make the camera point and shoot. It's also possible to set the camera for photos for particular situations - dusk, landscapes, fireworks, pictures of people with a blurred background etc. Plus panoramic pictures can be taken incorporating, in effect, a number of individual shots `glued' together. In the old days gluing is exactly what you would have had to do. The results of this are good, but displaying the results can be difficult. On LCD frames it's not possible to show, say, 8 shots linked together.

Neat features are automated face recognition with the ability for the camera to take a photo when the subject smiles (with various sensitivity settings so a picture will still be taken if they don't smile much!). 3D, like many Sony cameras, is included with individual and panoramic shots. This is quite clever as the camera only has one lens. I've a 3D TV and the results are pretty good. Moreover the picture resolution for still shots is high at 18 million pixels, in fact way ore than you'll need. A very strong point of the Sony Exmore sensor is performance in low light conditions. For example, where light is poor but you either don't want to use the flash, or flash is not suitable for, say, a distant shot, the camera takes multiple pictures and overlays and combines them to reduce camera shake and get the best possible results.

The camera, like many others, doubles as a video camera although it doesn't provide the highest high definition images of 1080p but nonetheless for such a small camera the results are good.

With any device there are some negative elements. Gripes here include the lack of a case - and a small form case is difficult to find from Sony. If you want a small camera you also want a snug case which does not add bulk to the camera. There is also no memory card. These are so cheap now it wouldn't hurt Sony to bundle one with the camera. There is a small amount of internal memory but that will allow you to take only a couple of photos. GPS would be good but not crucial by any means and higher spec Sony cameras with this take a while to get a satallite fix. Finally a HTMI cable to link to your TV would be nice.

In summary, if you're after a very compact camera with a decent optical (not digital) zoom this camera may be for you. One word of caution though if you're upgrading. I have the 2010 iteration of this camera - the DSC-WX1 - Sony tends to release a new range of cameras in the spring of each year. This 2010 camera is slightly bigger, but not much, and lacks a 10x zoom and 3D plus has `only' a 10.8 million pixel sensor. More or less everything else is the same however. So think hard if it's worth upgrading. On this, one thing Sony have got right is that my old camera had a shadow appearing in pictures using the flash caused by the zoom lens getting in the way of the flash. This only happened when the zoom was at maximum. For the new camera this is no longer a problem.

For a new buyer without a high-end compact camera, this Sony model deserves five stars. If you're upgrading perhaps four. I'd recommend it in any event.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small and very lightweight 8 Jun 2012
By MyKeyReviews TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Length: 9:55 Mins
Having owned the Sony DSCHX9VB which is part of the older series released by Sony, I was more than keen on getting my hands on this new model which whilst doesn't offer as much zoom, does offer more mega-pixels and features.

This model is extremely small, it's just a little bit bigger than the palm of my hand and is very light in weight.

Before I go into any more detail here are a few things it comes with and what you will need:

In the box:
Camera | AC adapter | USB to mini USB | Battery | Wrist strap | Manual.

Things you NEED:
Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card (You can choose a different brand/memory capacity).

Optional:
Camera Case | USB SDHC Card Reader | Spare Battery | HDMI - Mini HDMI cable | Anti-reflective Screen Protector | Depth Underwater Case.

- - -

Despite the camera being super small, it's comfortable to hold and it's really easy to navigate around the settings, for those who have owned an older Cyber-shot model such as the HX9, you will notice how familiar the settings are as they are practically the same with a few extras.

On the back you have a slider that lets you select which mode you want to be in; Picture, Panoramic, Movie mode, and within those modes you can go to different settings:

- PICTURE MODE:
* Program Auto; a full customisable setting which lets you change exposure value, ISO, white balance, focus, metering, burst setting, smile settings and face detections.
* Superior Auto; shoot sharp images reducing blur and noise automatically.
* Intelligent Auto; Exposure adjustment with automatic settings. (Great for most situations).
* Background defocus; adjust how much defocus you want the background to have which gives you a lower or greater depth of field.
* Picture effect; tons to choose from such as partial colour, watercolour, illustration, black & white, pop colour and more!
Partial colour is my favourite as it lets you single out a particular colour (red, blue, green & yellow), so if you have a red rose and have it on the red setting, the rose will be red, however everything else will be in black and white.
* Scene mode; 15 pre-set modes to give you the most out of certain scenes. Here are some scenes available; soft skin, landscape, night portrait, hand-held twilight, gourmet, beach and more.
* 3D still picture; viewable on 3DTV's.

- PANORAMA:
* iSweep panorama; shoot panoramic image by panning across the scene.
I love this setting, it's extremely easy to do and the results are fantastic, also choose from standard, wide or high-resolution panoramic shots.
* 3D sweep panorama; take a 3D panoramic image displayable on a 3DTV.
* Sweep multi-angle; can be displayed on a 3DTV or this camera, though personally is a bit of a gimmick setting in my opinion.
* Underwater sweep panorama; natural colours for a fantastic underwater shot. *Need the underwater housing for this mode!

- MOVIE:
You have the choice of three different video quality; FX (highest quality with 1920x1080(50i) resolution, FH (High quality 1920x1080(50i) & HQ (Standard quality with 1440x1080(50i) resolution.

Two modes are available in movie mode; 'Intelligent Auto' or 'Scene Mode' which will effect your picture outcome when taking a picture whilst recording.

The overall quality of the video and sound was decent, it's not as good as most camcorders available, however it's great for family videos and outings.

- - -

The battery life is pretty good, I've had it out for a whole day and didn't once need to recharge it until I got back home.

As for the screen, it's a TFT screen not LCD and whilst does display images very clearly it has a poor viewing angle.

I have been really pleased with the outcome of most shots, it does portrait, landscape, panoramic, daytime shots and night-shots(as long as the flash can cover the subject) brilliantly, as for low-light conditions without flash or night-time shots even when using hand-held twilight settings, have been extremely poor in my experience, I still have yet to take one good photo in such conditions.

Apart from that I really like this camera and would still recommend it, but for those who want that little bit extra, I would recommend an upgrade.
