Value & Performance Meets Slim, Stylish Looks The Cyber-shot DSCW55 Camera From Sony

Design and Build

Design and Build

Slender, stylish and highly affordable, this W Series Cyber-shot camera doesn’t compromise on looks, handy features or great imaging performance. Light and compact enough to slip easily into a pocket or bag, the Cyber-shot W55 is distinguished by it’s durable brushed aluminium facing. Plus a large 2.5’’
LCD screen.

Megapixels

Megapixels

Digital photos are made up of dots of coloured light called pixels (picture element). To make a photo requires millions of pixels (Megapixels). The more Megapixels a camera has, the smoother and clearer the photos will be. So, Crisp, clear images are assured courtesy of the 7.2 effective Megapixel sensor
and Real Imaging Processor.

Anti-Blur

Anti-Blur

Setting the user-friendly Mode Dial to High Sensitivity (REI)* mode boosts the maximum sensitivity of the camera to ISO 1000: this makes it easier to grab blurfree pictures, even when you’re shooting indoors without flash or in low light conditions.

Zoom

Zoooom

The high quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens offers a 3x optical zoom range and a 6x digital zoom capability along with a combined 14x Smart Zoom. The lens can also focus right down to 2cm shooting distance for extreme close-ups in Macro mode. Shots can be framed using the optical viewfinder as an alternative to the 2.5’’-inch LCD screen.

Sound and Vision

Sound and Vision

The movie function will record not only the visual image, but the sound to go with it, so you can really capture the moment. All of which can be played back via your TV, as well as viewing all your shots on TV too.

On Screen Funtion Guide

On Screen Funtion Guide

The handy Function Guide provides an on-screen description of each shooting mode, making it easier to pick exactly the right mode for any subject.

Extra memory

Extra memory

Its easy to get carried away with shots that are so easy to take, so if your memory card fills up, or you forgot to put it in – we’ve all done it - there’s an extra 56MB of memory built in.

Battery

Battery

The energy-efficient design of the DSCW55 delivers up to an impressive 380 shots between charges, so there’s less chance of missing that once-in-a-lifetime moment because you’re searching in a bag or pocket for a spare battery.

Pictbridge Direct Print

Pictbridge Direct Print

Pictbridge allows images to be printed directly from digital camera to a printer, without having to connect the camera to a computer.
PictBridge-capable printers typically have a USB Type A port which is then connected by cable to the USB port of a PictBridge-capable digital camera (typically a Type Mini-B). The user then uses the camera to select the pictures to print, which the printer then retrieves from the camera and prints.

Good points:
1. Great picture and sound for pictures and video
2. Useful functions e.g. landscape mode, for focus on things far away, beach mode, with gives the blue in the sea a rich colour, flash mode which really helps if you're in low light and you want a good picture.
3. Easy to use
4. Durable
5. Looks good doesn't it? And this time, looks aren't deceptive- the camera's JUST as good as it looks
6. Easy to transfer photos camera-> computer

I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago. What really attracted me to it was that is was so cheap- with 7.2MP, 3x optical zoom, and it's a sony camera, enough said? (at this time the camera was £125) Though after buying it, I wondered whether it really was a good camera, whether it was durable or just broke aart within weeks, whether the battery would only last for an hour and then you'd have to charge it for five times that amount of time. Well, yes you do have to charge it for a good 6-7 hours, but that seems like a second compared to the duration it can last. I charged my camera about 2 weeks before I went on holiday. I did, I admit, turn it on frequently before that, as I wanted to check out the features. On holiday (as a keen photographer) I took 100+ photos (as I bought a 1GB memory card, internal memory only holds 16 photos) and 16+ videos (which I thought that £125 for a photo and video camera was very kind) The sound and image quality of the videos and the image quality of, well the images was amazing, and you could really appreciate that if you transferred the pictures from your camera to the computer. Which was easy to do.
The functions of the camera are very easy to work out. Just turn the knob and all of a sudden, from taking a picture you're taking a video. No long loading time for the change in function.
No long loading time when you're turning the camera on/off.
Overall? Best camera I've purchased yet. Great value for money, though I'd advise you to buy 2+ 1GB memory cards as the internal memory sucks.

By Mr. Mark P. Williams VINE™ VOICE
I purchased this camera in May 2007, and have taken some 700 photo's since that time.

My requirements for purchasing a camera were that I wanted a lightweight, well made camera, and I spent a good couple of weeks sifting through various reviews of similar specified rivals before deciding on the Sony DCS-W55.

Good Points:
Quick start up
Various shooting modes for all conditions
Clear/sharp pictures
Strong battery life
Easy to load pictures/films onto PC via USB
Has a manual viewfinder as well as the digital screen (good for very sunny conditions)
Pocket size

Bad points:
The video feature doesn't allow to zoom in/out whilst in use
Internal memory small
No memory card supplied
No sturdy case

So far I have used the camera on a 3 week trip to Peru, and a couple of big nights out back home, and it has performed well in all conditions.

It is worth paying the extra over the W35 for the larger screen, this being the only difference between the 2 models.

I purchased a SanDisk MemoryStick Pro Duo Ultra II 2 GB and Sony LCS-TWDB Leather Carry Case leather, both of which are recommended.

Super buy 3 May 2007
Having unfortunately lost my previous Sony camera in an unfortunate vodka and coke accident, I decided to plump for the W55, having been tempted by the identically specified and cheaper W35 (albeit with a smaller LCD screen).

Am absolutely thrilled with the new camera. Pictures are sharp and bright, but very detailed - I'm amazed but I can notice a difference between my old 4MP and this new 7.2MP camera. Very light, the aluminium front looks spectacular and the menus are so intuitive - they are like the Nokias of the camera world, just so easy to give to anyone and for them to use.

The only downsides are that the 2.5inch LCD screen I think has a lower resolution than my old 1.5inch screen, but there wouldn't be much in it and the size increase more than compensates. Also, the fact it doesn't use AA rechargeable batteries like my old Sony does make you particularly vulnerable to running out of battery, whereas with my old camera you could just throw a couple of ordinary AA batteries in to get you by in an emergency. However I suppose the dimensions of the latest models just wouldn't allow it. Forward planning and perhaps buying a spare would solve this no problem.

Finally, there aren't that many cases that fit it very snugly. It is really small and finding a nice protective case or pouch to put it in has been tricky.

Yet overall I am exceptionally pleased and value-for-money is unbeatable.
