Yes, it's got an excellent Carl Zeiss lens, 6.0 mega pixels and as many or as few user controls as you want, but the best things (why don't camera manufacturers tell you this?) are the rapid time from pressing the power on button to your first shot - vital if you want to catch a magic moment with your children, or a comic moment on a skiing holiday - and an almost instant shutter release when you press the button.

The Sony battery pack is rechargeable, which I prefer to expensive AA batteries, but you'll need a memory stick duo (I bought a 512MB from a clone manufacturer) and a soft protective pouch, which will add £50 or so the your price.

Rarely do I award any product 5 stars, and Sony's quality has been questionable in recent years, but in this case, 5 starts are deserved.

Being something of a newcomer to the world of photography, i wanted something affordable yet stylish, bundles of features but simple to use. And do you know what, I think ive found it!

The DSC-W30 gives clear, crisp photos every time. Designated buttons for each featue (designated flash, macro, timer and brightness buttons) make it easy to set things how you want it. A whole host of settings mean you can control everything you want.

The video function is good, easy to use, clear. Same goes for normal photos; you get a whole 6mp in here, and a zoom that can go up to 13x on the right settings (unfortunately thats on VGA quality though!) I havent got a picture that ive deleted due to poor lighting; the flash is powerful alright! the built in autofocus means the list of positives gets even bigger!

This camera really is a gem to look at. A sleek silver colour, and its really small, too. It fits into your pocket really easily; I can't fault this camera. Even the battery is rechargeable, saving money on replacement AAAs.

With a case and memory stick you might add another £50 or so, but this really is an ideal camera for people looking to try photography; both beginners and those with more experience. Can't recommend more!

Top Quality Camera 21 July 2006
I was looking for a camera that was small, easy to use, had a long life rechargeable battery and would produce top quality photos. This camera does all this.

The first thing that struck me was that this is a very compact camera, but all buttons were easy to use and not too fiddly. The on-screen help is great, so you do not need to dive into the manual every 5 minutes to understand the features. The quality of the photos is top class. Video mode is cool, although not a substitution for a real camcorder. As well as the digital screen, the camera has a regular viewfinder, which helps when shooting in bright sunlight.

The bundled software is, like the camera, very easy to understand. It offers all the basic editing features you would need, such as cropping, red eye removal, brightness/ contrast editing etc.

As with virtually all digital cameras, you will need to buy a memory card to be able to store a decent amount of photos.

Overall, highly recommended.
