Zoom in on detail

You want to take your photography up a notch. Keep the freedom to point and shoot, of course, but be able to really get up close with distant subjects and capture professional-looking shots with ease. Size matters. Nothing too big and bulky. Slim lines and light weight is what you’re after so you can carry the camera around from dawn to dusk without your wrist or shoulder aching. Everything should be automatic for those spontaneous moments, whether you’re taking high resolution pictures, 3D panoramas or full HD video. In other words, you want a camera that’s a doddle to use but with all the creative features at hand when a shot calls for some imagination.

Get up close and personal

Being able to zoom in on something or someone without moving an inch is a real pleasure. Just imagine your mate across the room at a party, busy chatting someone up, totally unaware you’re watching. With up to 16x zoom, you can almost lip-read what he’s saying. The high zoom on this camera gets you right in the thick of the action and because it’s optical, you won’t lose any picture quality.

Low light a speciality

Sunrises, sunsets, some of the most dramatic pictures are taken in that twilight between night and day. But the fact is, you need a pretty decent camera to capture it perfectly. How many times have you shot at dawn or dusk, only to get back home and be royally disappointed with the dark, grainy results? With this camera, you’ll have no such problem as it includes an Exmor R CMOS sensor, the best low light sensor we’ve ever put into a compact. So when you’re trying to capture a tree at dusk with the sky on fire behind it, you know the darkness won't hide the detail in the scene.

Optical SteadyShot for taking stable handheld pictures while walking.

Everything sharp and vivid

There’s nothing complicated about megapixels. The more you have in your camera, the sharper and finer your pictures, especially when enlarged or played back on your big screen TV. No more fuzzy faces, diluted detail or blurred backgrounds. No more hammering away at the delete button. If you want to blow up a great shot of yourself and get it framed, it’s a sure bet you’ll see much more detail with a high megapixel camera. This one has plenty of pixels – over 18 million to be precise - more than enough to make impressive large prints or crop a picture to focus on something specific without losing definition.

Pro shots with ease

Ever worried whether your shots will match your vision? Well, worry no more as this camera makes taking professional-looking pictures a doddle. How? By including our best ever Optical SteadyShot for shake-free, blur-free photos or videos even while walking or zooming in and Superior Auto for completely automatic light and focus setting of up to 15 scenes*. You’ll never again miss that spontaneous photo opportunity – just pick up the camera and off you go.

Films sparkling HD video

It’s a windy day on the beach. The parasol has gone cartwheeling towards the sea and all the family are in hot pursuit. Except you. A photo won’t quite bring out the comedy in the scene so you switch to video and start filming, all at the touch of a button and in glorious high definition. Look at the colours in the parasol, the detail in the surf, the perfectly reproduced panic in their voices – in stereo of course. Then when you get back home, transfer everything to your PC and enjoy the farce. PlayMemories software does everything for you in seconds so you can get editing or uploading or e-mailing in the time it takes to make a cuppa. After all, be a shame if that parasol experience stayed unseen in your camera, wouldn’t it?

Everyone in the shot

School reunion, your old classmates looking a bit worse for wear after a night on the town. Just before the party breaks up, you need a picture. But how often have you framed the shot only to find you can’t get everyone in? Poor old Amir and Andre with half their receding hairline and double chin missing. Moving back is one way you can get them in but of course, that means you’re farther away so you’ll lose detail. Better to get a camera with a wide angle lens and pack as much as possible in your shot. Then if you want to home in on someone, maybe your first ever crush who’s looking fitter than ever, optical zoom gets you sixteen times closer at the touch of a button.

Superior Auto – automatic light and focus setting of up to 15 scenes.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama

There’s times when the scenery is just so vast and never-ending that even a wide angle lens can’t catch it all. So where do you film? Over here, over there? Or do you take several shots and hope they’ll link together somehow? The Solution – Intelligent Sweep Panorama. You simply press the shutter while sweeping the camera slowly from one side to the other to create one amazing panoramic image.

Wow, looks great in 3D

If you’ve got a 3D TV in your living room, why wouldn’t you want a 3D camera? The chance to see your summer holiday shots brought vividly back to life in a whole new dimension on the big screen? This camera takes great 3D photos – just press the shutter button and it takes two consecutive shots then analyses depth and clarity to create a single 3D image. It also lets you capture stunning landscapes and cityscapes in panoramic 3D with Intelligent 3D Sweep Panorama.

Tracks your adventures

Like travelling? Good, then you’ll appreciate having GPS on your camera. It tells you just where you took that shot of the mountains and displays your position on screen during your journey. You can relive your adventure when you get back home with online map views on your computer.

Catches every detail

Family sprinting across the beach? Fighter planes at an airshow? No problem with this camera. It can shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second, grouping sequences of shots together and analysing them so you can quickly pick out the best picture. Even better, the mechanical shutter eliminates distortion for perfect clarity.

Impressive background blur

Take portraits and other photos with natural blur, just as you would with a Digital SLR camera. Background Defocus mode is easy to use and allows you to choose low, medium or high blur. It’s the same kind of dynamic effect you see in the movies and really gives you the freedom to get artistic with your pictures. Great for sharply defined close-ups of people or flowers against a blurred forest or field.

Need a creative boost

Perk up your pictures easily using Picture Effects. Enhance mood and style by choosing from a full range of effects including Toy Camera, Partial Colour for stunning monochrome shots, Soft High-Key, trendy Pop Colour, watercolour and Illustration. This last effect is really cool, turning your pictures into great-looking cartoons.

No point in squinting

We’ve all done it or laughed at someone else doing it. Squinting through a tiny screen to frame a shot or look at a photo. This camera refuses to put you in that ridiculous situation by including a large screen with a wide viewing angle so everything is as easy and comfortable as possible. You’ll enjoy excellent detail and high contrast, even in sunshine. Just imagine being in the mountains, taking shots with your friends, then gathering round at the cabin to enjoy the slideshow.

Let’s face it, we like smiles

They’re natural, spontaneous, here one moment, gone the next. You just don’t have time to set up your camera for a quick smile shot so this one does it all for you. Smile Shutter automatically takes pictures when people smile – great for brides and grooms, birthday celebrations and baby chuckles. Face Detection automatically adjusts exposure, focus and skin tone so everyone looks more natural. Even better, the camera detects up to 8 faces at a time while working on that irritating red eye effect to make sure your portraits are near on perfect.

* Scenes include High Sensitivity, Night Scene, Handheld Twilight, Night Portrait, Landscape, Soft Snap, Soft Skin, Anti Motion Blur, Backlight Correction HDR, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Advanced Sports Shooting, Gourmet and Pet Mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding travel compact camera 12 Nov 2012
Colour Name:Red|Amazon Verified Purchase
Firstly, as pointed out below, Amazon sells the HX10V model, not the HX10 which the Amazon heading/title indicates (the model sold by Amazon has GPS, the HX10 does not; formally, I received a DSC-HX10VRC 1080 50i AC100v-240v. This means DSC=digital still camera; V=with GPS; R=red).

I've had the HX9V for 18 months/7500photos, and been extremely pleased with it. The HX10V is a significant and worthwhile upgrade: most things are slightly faster and better, and the new price is remarkable value, well ahead of the competition for travel cameras I think.

From a cold start (30min since off), the HX10V can take a picture about 4 seconds after turning on, half the time of the HX9V. Usefully, video shooting starts also starts 2 seconds (rather than 5 seconds) after pressing the button (top-tip: video-taking starts much more quickly if you have the rotary selector on top set to 'movie' too). Importantly, the long 10 seconds recording time of videos after stopping filming is reduced to a few seconds, before you can do anything with the camera. You can also take still photos while making a video on the HX10V. Photographs are taken slightly faster after pushing the button, more can be taken per second (another top-tip: although it works without formatting, using the camera 'format memory card' function speeds it up). Resolution is up by 12%; the lens seems identical and is excellent, with quite close/macro focussing possible. A significant upgrade is the standard micro-USB plug on the camera, rather than the close but different Sony proprietary socket on the HX9V. The top panel, not shown in the Amazon pictures, has unfortunately been downgraded on the HX10V, not I think just my being used to the 9V: the on/off button is smaller, deep in plastic, and next to the shutter (needing a really firm press with a small finger to turn on), while the selector knob is buried and less knurled: both are hard to operate with cold hands outside today, and near-impossible with gloves. GPS lock-on is fast and sensitive (eg near a window in a room where the HX9V cannot get a signal), and a great boon for the way I take pictures and videos anyway, and unlike devices on large SLR cameras at 10x the price, includes compass information. All the control software/menu operation has been improved and simplified: the not-particularly-useful Custom and Memory Recall are deleted, but sadly they are not replaced by manual exposure and raw save options, both of which the lens/sensor quality could easily exploit.

I realise a comparative review may not be useful to many people, since few will have the chance to have the old and new models. The differences are small enough to not make 'upgrading' worthwhile, but if you have a use for a second travel camera, or are changing from a basic holiday camera, the HX10V is outstanding in its performance: I will use it in place of an larger multi-lens SLR camera regularly. The lens is excellent and speed of response to buttons not limiting (unlike the HX9V and other travel compacts).

5.0 out of 5 stars So good and at this price a steal. 27 Dec 2012
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Verified Purchase
My previous camera was Panasonic, and although pretty expensive and advanced was very poor taking pictures at night. This Sony camera is, to put it simply, just brilliant. extremely good night time photos, 16 optic zoom, wide angle lense, no shutter lag, and can you believe it takes 3d as well. It also takes hd video to the same quality as my dedicated Sony hd camcorder, so best of both worlds when only want to take one item out. Or of the vest features is that it tracks people's faces when zooming, and detect if it is child, and has smile recognition so well auto take your child's picture when they smile. I have a 10 month old and a 3 year old, so this feature, which actually works in real life, is amazing.

I can't tell you how happy I am with it, and would strongly recommend. My only tip would be to get a case, and the are some very good value for money ones from Sony as well. The camera is lightweight and mad of composite materials, I.e. not metal, and so I do feel that a good case is needed to protect the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shooting Star 23 May 2012
By tallpete33 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I owned a 2Mp Sony Cybershot back in the day and although it was a fairly decent camera, it failed on me after about 18 months and that combined with the proprietary memory put me off the brand for a while and I went down the Nikon / Olympus route. Offered a chance by amazon vine to test this item however, I gave Sony a chance to redeem themselves in my eyes and this camera certainly has.

Out of the box I was quickly up and running with the 3.6v li-ion battery and my 16Gb SanDisk Extreme card installed. The flap that contains those is bit flimsy but locks shut safely. Build quality otherwise is excellent and it has a nice weighty feel and enough curves to feel more comfortable than my Olympus XZ-1 (more of that later) although like most modern compacts it feels just a bit small in my big mits and the dial could be a bit more prominent. Button layout is pretty standard although the macro and landscape etc buttons are missing from the dial. There's a reason for this - with the iAuto (the ubiquitous green camera icon) selected, point it at something close and it enters Macro, point out of the window and the landscape icon appears. Clever stuff. The menu is a work of art - context sensitive, attractive and intuitive. I was pretty much sorted with most functions including the fun stuff in an hour or two. No paper manual is provided as seems to be the norm these days.

Picture quality is excellent, with warm bold colours and great contrasts and excellent low light performance. Hit the down button whilst lining up a shot and you get some great pre shot tools to adjust the brightness and colour etc but my favourite is the "partial colour" option. Select red, green, blue or yellow and it will take monochrome pictures but with the selected colour (only) vivdly standing out to great effect in stills or video. Fantastic and creative results with just the push of a button. Photoshop be very afraid. Layer the "illustration" effect on one of these pictures afterwards and a great pop art / van Gogh type picture is the result. These have to be viewed on the big screen to be appreciated more. Note I have posted some examples in the images section. There is also a watercolour option but the jury is out on that one.

Other features include a background defocus option for a variable bokeh effect and 3D stills and panoramas but not having a 3D TV I'm not best placed to test those yet. HD video looks excellent with a slowish but quiet zoom available during shooting but I haven't thoroughly tested this as I'm more of a stills man. The default movie format is AVCHD which requires the inbuilt Sony software (connect the camera to your PC to install - it does not come on disk) to view the .mts files or you could download VLC for free which I prefer.

As mentioned I also own the Olympus XZ-1 which is in a similar price bracket and also a great piece of kit so I will make some quick comparisons:

HX10 pro's:

More ergonomic
Clearer and more user friendly menu
3D features
16x zoom
Smaller and lighter
No lens cap
More creative features

XZ-1 pro's:

More control over shots
Slightly better lens
Viewfinder available (as an expensive option)
Excellent "Dramatic Tone" and "Grainy black and white" filter
RAW shooting capability

In short the XZ-1 is more suited to the photographic Stig's of this world who will be able to get the most out of it and not be put of by it's sharp corners and prototype feel. The Sony is a more refined and user friendly bit of kit that will probably have more mass appeal IMO although advanced users may feel slightly constrained by it. As I also have a DSLR for my "serious" photographic days, the Sony is the keeper for my pocket although it was a close run thing for the reasons above.

PS If you're looking for a case for this I would recommend the SONY LCS-CSQ PHOTO BAG which is a decent branded item for under a tenner.

PPS Battery failed after a few months not too heavy use. Unimpressed although a generic replacement was only a fiver delivered from this site.
