If you've played any of the other Ridge Racer titles, you can jump right into Ridge Racer V and hold your own. The new Dual Shock 2 takes a bit of getting used to, if only because the d-pad takes a lot more pushing to get your vehicle to turn. Other than that, power-slides work like a charm.
Ridge Racer V graphics seem to be better than any other racer ever created on a console. The vehicles have more polygons than you can imagine, and their reflective surfaces are just dazzling. When you go up through the gears, the sense of speed that Namco has created is second to none and showcases the horsepower of the PlayStation 2. Drive through an underpass and things get darker; exit into an open area and the glare will seem blinding.
Gamers will find plenty of vehicles to choose from at the outset with more available as you improve. This will obviously add replay value to the arcade racer. The season mode resembles Ridge Racer Type 4, without straying too far from Namco's successful formula. Those who dislike the Ridge Racer series will still dislike the power sliding, and it's lack of tracks. The tracks included here feature designs that embody non-stop excitement with hair-pin turns and jumps galore.
With both this and the more sober Gran Turismo 2000, gamers can't complain about any lack of quality racers. While radically different from each other, both are great games and definitely worth checking out. --Todd Mowatt
But that's not the only thing as the PlayStation 2's Emotion Engine really comes into its own here. Tyres smoke and sparks fly if you collide with the walls or other cars, and the passing scenery is even reflected in the highly polished bodywork and windscreens of the cars as you race around at a near impossible velocity. What ever you do, just don't get caught short of adrenaline.

If you like the ridge series (like myself )then you will love this game. The graphics are quite impressive and it moves at a fast pace providing excitement and tension as you have to turn extremely tight corners at high speeds. The gameplay has a good solid arcade feel for it, making it a game you can pick up again and again for a quick blast. There are a lot of fun modes like driving a special round yellow man's car.(guess who). Overall another good title from namco moving a grat series of racing games onto the next generation. If you like ridge games then you'll love it and if you love good, quality and exciting games then look no further. There is hardly any better than namco for excellent arcade games.

This could have been a brilliant game, but as it stands it is merely only good. The graphics make GT2 and RRT4 look like something from the SNES, the music' quite good, you can choose your car's colour, and the gameplay isn't half bad either. However it is held back by a number of things - not nearly enough tracks, a VERY irritating commentator which can't be switched off, no option to customise the controls, etc. As for realism, the physics are far too general; and play it too much and it soon becomes boring. Hopefully RR6 (if there is to be one, that is) will come out better formed than this inconsistent effort. Buy it if you really want, but I recomend waiting for GT3.

This game rocks!,

After hearing about all it's bad points it was actually curious what was so bad about. When I rented it I was so hooked I just had to buy it! First the graphics do suffer from Jagged edges and a bit of Pop-up besides it great! The gameplay is superb and when you're racing you'll get the edge the push harder just to win. The cars themselves are very nice and their drivers while not smart they won't hesistate to barge you off the road during a vital bend. My advice buy this game. Ignore all the people who say it's bad, this game will control your desire.
