The plot is fairly straightforward: a 15-year-old girl, who happens to have three burly bouncers for buddies, gets kidnapped by a multi-national corporation. The guys decide to take action; setting off for the corporate HQ, stumbling upon all manner of bizarre and intriguing mysteries.
The Bouncer is, in essence, a fighting game similar to the old Capcom title Final Fight. The bulk of the plot is driven by non-interactive FMV sequences, with the player taking control of one of the three main protagonists at the beginning of the fight sequences--of which there are many. Given the number of moves it's possible to make during the heat of battle, Square have made intelligent use of the DualShock pad, allowing high, medium and low-level attacks, the strength of which can be altered according to how hard you hit the buttons.
Falling as it does between interactive novel and beat-em-up there's a little something here for everyone, and if all else fails The Bouncer is so visually appealing that it will be difficult not to like it. --Chris Russell

It is a fact that Squaresoft can't make bad games,

I have still to play a Squaresoft game that I didn't like or thought wasn't that good. In my opinion, this game is brilliant. The graphics are gorgeous and probably the best you'll find on the PS2. They rival, if not better, the graphics of Final Fantasy X. The story is quite good; it's good enough to make you actually want to carry on with the game and make it to the end. The characters, designed by legend Tetsuya Nomura (FFVII,VIII,X), each have great depth and individual stories which are helped with impressive voice acting. Yes: story mode is quite short, but for me the game has a high replay factor simply because it is enjoyable to play through the story again, but also because of the extra bits and pieces of story you can pick up by playing as different fighters. There are also several characters that, depending on how you play, you can unlock for use in versus and survival modes. Versus mode is good, as you can play against three other computer-controlled characters so it doesn't matter if you don't have another controller or another person to play against. It is also fun controlling the extra characters and using all the cool moves that they whipped your ass with when you fought them in story mode. Survival mode is ok, I have yet to complete it with Sion, but I heard that you can win extra costumes for him if you do so. In conclusion, I give this game five stars because it is blindingly gorgeous, and engrossingly playable.

Bouncing Goodness,
By Talvon (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Bouncer (PS2) (Video Game)
I rented this game for £2.50 and found it was excellent. The graphics were amazing (Almost perfect) in the cut scenes (Like watching a movie!) and in the gameplay! The cutscenes had voice-overs to make the game slightly more lifelike and helped create atmosphere. The storyline was o.k, could've been better and not very realistic becuase the gene mutated people and the lady who could turn into a panther was not very realistic, although the graphics made it seem so. I was playing the game through thinking it was great, but I got dissapointed when I completed the game in around 1 hour and 30 minutes with Volt (1 of the 3 characters) 1st time around, and found the games got shorter and shorter each time round. I completed it with Volt 1st, then Sion (The character whos had his girlfriend kidnapped) and finally Kou. All characters have different endings, and in the 2 days I rented the game for, I saw all of them. I completed it with all 3 charaters in around 5 hours and 30 minutes. The games loading times are short, about 3-10 seconds at the most, and during these times people who are amused by flashy things will be kept entertained. In verses mode you need a multitap in control port 2 which is a bit of a blow because I wanted to verse my sister and didn't have one so I can't review that. Survival mode is pretty fun, trying out all the extra characters moves, even the bosses! But you have to go through the game and unlock them to get them all. I enjoyed the game alot and would recommend it to anyone at retail price but this games only lack is its lifetime, a few hours at most. I wouldn't buy this game at full price, I'd get it on retail because you would easily complete it at least once, even if you are a novice gamer.

THE BOUNCER,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bouncer (PS2) (Video Game)
Okay, where to start, GREAT! This is not a long game but this is a great game! With Versus mode, Story and Developed by the best game company, SquareSoft. I completed it in about one and a half hours, but it really is a good game, I suggest you buy it straight away or atleast rent it. It is cram packed with great gameplay and graphics, and gameplay a bit more, then gameplay, all together. So if you like beat 'em ups and love games with lots of fighting Bouncer is the game for you!
