I bought the HT-AS5 to replace an older Sony DVD System, and no longer needed a DVD player built into the hi-fi component of my TV setup. I have to say, I've been delighted with this system ever since.

I have plugged into the HT-AS5 the following: Sony PlayStation 3 160GB Slim Console, AC Ryan Playon!HD Mini - FullHD Network Mediastreamer, Humax Foxsat HDR 1TB Freesat HD Digital TV Recorder (Requires Satellite Dish) (all HDMI).

While most people might choose to plug such items directly into the TV and then have all sound outputted via the optical cable to the hi-fi (so that the hi-fi only needs to be on one setting for all items used), it turns out this is not the best set up to have. The reason is that virtually no TV will pass through any sort of surround sound signal via its optical out - it will be downgraded to stereo only. However, items such as a DVD player, or a PS3, or a media streamer all output surround sound. What's more, optical cables cannot support HD Audio (such as uncompressed LPCM, for example from a Blu-ray Player), so *any* surround sound source must be plugged directly into the hi-fi itself. So even if you have plenty of HDMI ins on your TV, don't resort to this. It will lower your audio quality. One final issue is that of lag.

Ordered this before it came out, after hearing great things. I now hear great things through the AS5, and in glorious 5.1
Found it very easy to set up, including my SKY HD box, linked to the AS5 with a Neet Black Line HDMI cable. My TV only had one HDMI input, so this solved a few problems with the three ports. I will confess to being a Sony junkie, but this is really great for music, movies and tellybox. The auto calibration with supplied mic made it an even quicker system to fine tune.

    Verified Purchase
Works well in all departments ie Blueray Player, including with a Humax Freesat+ box.
Stunning sound and picture quality and simple to use. Requires an HDMI lead from each of the units to be used with it and one to the TV, don't skip on quality for price.
    Highly recommended.

purchased this and it arrived today, took it out of the box, plugged in the speakers to their colour coded ports on the amp/sub, plugged in my Sony bluray player and skyHD to the hdmi, plugged the whole lot into my sony hdmi tv port and that was it, apart from settng the auto speaker calibration, within half hour i had superb sound filling my lounge.....the same remote works the whole lot. the cables for the speakers were not the length i required but as the spearker side of the cable is open ended there was no problem in extending them to suit my needs. the speakers do feel a little on the light side but this is just my opinion and is not a reflection of their quality.I did find the need to reduce the center speaker down a little as it was too high for me and made speach sound a bit "tinny".....but again this is just my opinion.....take a bit of time to tweek the speaker levels to your own prefernces and you wont be dissapointed, the sound, backed up by the deep tones of the sub remains crisp and clear at any volume level....
I have had high end Bose systems in the past and the sound quality on this set up is up there with the best, .........on the whole a very impressive system that you would expect from sony.

I always appreciate the reviews on amazon and thought I would contribute on this particular
    purchase.

This 5.1 system was bought to simplify my living room setup and reduce the clutter of av separates and big speakers. As much as I tried in the past to be an audiophile I never committed financially to completing my system and once kids arrived I never actually sat down to listen to my existing setup in all it's glory.

Took me a while to find this kit with onkyo offers looking very attractive but with Sony's ARC audio return system and their sync compatibility between the led tv's and the sub on this kit, the ability to turn off all with one remote was more attractive.

Connection: sync works well but the plan to predominantly use one remote for both doesn't quite work out.unless I've missed a page in the distruction manual the sync aspect applies to some limited audio settings from the tv relating to the amp and the standby function. The 5.1 remote has many functions not covered by the tv remote and vice versa.
Inputs are plenty and cover the major requirements. With Sony ARC, Anything plugged into the tv sending sound to it, is forwarded to the 5.1 via the singular ARC hdmi port connection.
This means you are not limited to only connecting devices to the ports on the 5.1 sub and don't need multiple cables going back and forth. Check your Sony tv's specs for ARC compatibility.

Sound for music: you do compromise on the audio aspect for music, no matter the setting I haven't found nirvana as yet in terms of 2 speaker audio. the sub can be a little boomey blindly thumping out when a little sensitivity is required. Dialling it down is recommended.
Overall it produces a nice sound which would meet most people's expectations.
