This is a really slick, elegant, well priced piece of equipment. My nano i-pod fits well.
The main pleasure is the quality of the sound. I am not hugely technical in this area, but the bass allows me to enjoy cello concertos in a way that my other, cheaper player never did. Truly hugs you with sound.
The DAB radio is disappointing as there is only a flimsy wire aerial and I have another radio with a rigid aerial which works and provides perfect clarity, so that is the reason for four stars.
However, if you want a good, versatile CD product at a fair price with great looks, this is it.
It was very easy to set up from getting it out the box, one major plus point with this system is that you can control your ipod from the sony remote which is a nice touch as long as you know the menu layout of your ipod, the system has a nice quality sound to it (once eq'd properly in the settings) and would recommend it to anyone and plus getting it cheeper than from the high street!! (I saved £40)
I wanted a Dab radio as 5 live on am is very intermittent.
I also did not want to keep playing a single disk and had been connecting my Netbook or I-pod via the auxiliary input, but had to boot up and plug it all in.
This unit allows me to play it in seconds.
I am still using the opus speakers which might and probably will give superior sound quality than the small Sony speakers.
Dab radio reception is excellent as is FM, but the unit is situated on the upper floor and in a good reception area.
Sound quality I have found to be very good, clear and vibrant with good bass when required, the power output is more than adequate for my bedroom.
The remote controls take a bit of getting used to and I even had to resort to the instructions at one point to pre-set the various DAB and FM stations and retrieve them once programmed.
I have not used the CD player so cannot comment but would imagine it to be as good as any.
Only downside is the light intensity of the LCD display which is to bright for night use.
For a cheap DAB/HiFi unit I can highly recommend it.
The drawback? The speaker cabling is quite short, at about 6 feet, so is the power cable. The power cable issue is easy to fix, but the speaker cables are hardwired into the cabinets, so any extension that you'd need requires a soldering iron... Could probaly use thicker wires too, from experience that does help the dynamic range even on a basic system.
Overall, this is a bargain priced product, but very far from bargain basement performance. Perfect for the bedroom, so go buy one.
On the negative side, I was hoping to be able to connect in a number of external "auxillary" items (5 CD player, DVD player and a double tape deck). Whilst it does have one input jack port on the front, it means constantly changing the plug between the items. Not impossible, but not ideal.
The one thing that has caused frustration is that if you turn off the power for longer than a few hours it loses the time and all of the radio presets. It will do a search when you turn it back on, but you have to scroll through all of the stations to get your preferred one.
It seems strange that Sony haven't solved this issue, when we are constantly told to turn off at the plug to save the planet!

Annoyingly the radio goes off for about 30 seconds shortly after switching on. Not good if you have just switched on to listen to the news. Otherwise it is fine.Published 6 months ago by Dave P
