I am one of the few people in this world it seems, who still have a tape collection they actually want to listen to. Sure you can download MP3s left, right and center these days but either you are in it because of the authentic tape-sound or because you simply are curious what you did record on it 20 years ago.

For years I was using a Sony TCM-50DV cassette player to listen to my tapes. While the TCM is still in production there is absolutely no sound quality whatsoever and when you were using headphones, it sounded like you were sitting inside a coke-can - It simply was appalling. So I needed to make a decision what to do about my collection. Scrap it OR try to go out and find a decent, low-cost player. I decided to go for it!

When you are trying to find a tape playing stereo system in the 2nd decade of the 21st century, you sometimes feel (just like a cassette) that you do not belong into these times anymore. The lack of quality choices is sad yet I did come along a few products which gauged my interest.

After some extensive research, the one product that got high water marks across the board (and which Amazon reviewers rated the best as well), was the JVC RV-NB 10. These days out of production, you can still find this 'mother of modern-day boom boxes' being sold for as much as EURO 550,00 (!!!). In the last few years JVC kept the series alive but replaced the tape deck with an iPod docking station (go figure). I therefore tried my best to find a used RV-NB 10 but it was impossible without spending a fortune. At the same time, some copy-cat knock-offs, which look identical to the RV-NB 10, are being made by some 3rd-tier companies (also available via Amazon unfortunately). Don't be fooled into buying those; its a total scam.

Size Does Matter--Big, Beautiful Sound 30 Jun. 2013

It's big and it's heavy and it eats batteries, but what sound. Ideally you should try to use an extension cord for outdoors, but you can get around 5 hours from the eight batteries it requires. Sony has always had great speakers on its boomboxes and this is no exception. I play a lot of CDs and they sound terrific on this machine. I could do without the light show on the woofer but I guess the product design is for a younger audience. I think battery life would improve if the lights could be turned off (they can't). There's also AM/FM radio, USB and a cassette tape player. FM reception is exceptional; I don't even have to put up the antenna (of course I live just outside NYC so that might have something to do with it). I haven't had occasion to use the USB but I'm sure it will serve its purpose. This is a solid product, especially if your a member of the older generation and are listening to real music. And the name (Ghettoblaster) is apt for those who want to crank up the volume and push the woofer to its limits; you won't be disappointed. If you have a large CD or tape collection you might want to consider purchasing this product since newer items are being designed strictly for IPods and USB sources. I think that good CD/tape players with good speakers are going to be hard to find and in spite of the in-your-face design, the sound is there and that's the most important issue.

The lights that this brand insists on having with the woofer/bass is just obnoxious. If I knew this I would not buy it. also, the controls are not quite intuitive, meaning some buttons for skip and tuner are not next to each other, or the stop/record are so close it's easy to hit the wrong one.
The directions clearly state what to do to make certain playlists and all, but it could definately be done an easier way, the buttons used for customization are just NOT very friendly, and it seems there's a differnet method to each customization or tweak you want. It's liek 2 or 3 people decided to get onto each item, so it's impossible to memorize.
Otherwise, I really liked the USB/sd card play feature, the tape and cd feature are a must! and the radio picks up a lot.

This stereo is great. I especially like being able to copy cd's to a flash drive so I don't have to carry cd cases everywhere. Sounds awesome. Would definitely recommend.
