I have a 5.1 surround system in my own bedroom but wanted something easy to operate for my parents in the living room downstairs and this ticks all the boxes.
The 3D blu-ray player is of exceptional quality, easy to operate and very clear on screen menus. The player has 2 hdmi inputs and an output to the telly so you can connect 2 extra hdmi units as well as the blu-ray player to be seen. This is very useful if you have one of the 42 inch earlier generation plasma screens still cranking in the living room as my parents do (I refer to the TV re:cranking not my parents) , seeing as it only has one HDMI input socket.
The subwoofer sits neatly at the side of the TV , a black square box and whereas it is ugly at the rear, you only see the front which is smart so I don't see the problem. I can hear the boom from the bedroom upstairs and from the study downstairs and that's with normal TV playing. The bass can be adjusted obviously. It also has a range of different sound adjustments for different audio preferences so you can turn everything up and down easily or select pre set menus for audio cds, theatre, surround sound, movies etc.
The blu-ray unit also has a usb input on the front so you can select a Hard Disk portable drive and play back MKV and DiVX files as well as photos and other media encoded material. I did notice that a significant proportion of my DiVX files (about 40%) were not recognised by the unit however, so don't rely on it playing everything from external sources ( especially XVids I imagine ) although the files I created were all official DiVX files.
Not suitable for surround sound experiences obviously as it only has 2 small speakers and the sub woofer but is a great addition to the TV and looks neat and sleek. The front speakers sit on the TV unit table in front of the screen but are small enough not to block any part of the screen behind them. A Sky Box or Virgin Media cable box fits directly in to the blu-ray unit via HDMI which processes both sound and video and greatly improves what virtually any TV has to offer on the market today in terms of sund quality.

Sony 2.1 Home Cinema 17 Dec 2011
This product is exactly what it says on the 'tin'. If, like me, you don't want the hassle of 5 surround speakers, but your new ultra-thin LED TV is a bit weak on the bass-front, then this system is ideal. The Sub-woofer looks stylish and the satellite speakers do not look like computer speakers unlike a previous review. The iPod dock is a handy addition also. Easily setup via HDMI and adds a wonderfully warm and lively sound to my new TV - just the ticket.

I can't quite understand the previous customer's one star review - except for the fact that he/she clearly didn't spend time adjusting all the settings to get the desired sound. I think this is a great set-up for the price. It was very easy to connect to our LG 3D TV as well as Sky+HD box, XBox 360 and Wii, although we did need to connect the blu ray box with an HDMI and audio/video cable in order to hear the TV/Xbox/Wii sound through the system.

The ipod dock is a separate little 'dish' that sits separately. It woked well with my son's ipod touch and he was thrilled to find that not only could he play his music through the speakers, but he could actually watch his ipod video on the TV screen using the video input cable from the dock connected to the TV - although the resolution was obviously not great on a big screen (no fault of the home cinema system I might add).

If you are considering buyging this then you know that it has 3 speakers and not 5 like some systems, so you are therefore not expecting surround sound. However, this is a great step-up from the TV speakers, and good for anyone in the position we are in of not being able to have rear speakers due to the layout of the room. The subwoofer produces a great bass sound and was a real enhancement to our blu ray viewing. In total contrast to the previous one-star reviewer, the whole family thought the sound was rich and it certainly filled the room.

Initially the sound/vision was out of sync when playing a DVD or blu ray and also through the TV, but this can be easily adjusted by following the instructions in the set-up guide. It's best to turn down or mute the TV sound though in case you don't get the synchronisation exactly right.

Watching our first 3D blu ray (Tron legacy) was a great experience. We thought that we might have to fiddle with the settings to get the 3D viewing right, but it was actually just a case of putting in the disc and off we go!

My only criticism (hence 4 stars) is that we now have to use 3 remote controls if we want to watch Sky TV with sound through the Sony system. We have to select the Sky/HDMI-1 input using the TV remote (as my boys always leave it on the XBox/HDMI-2 setting!), the use Sony remote to select 'TV' on the home cinema system, and then use the Sky remote to select channels etc. I suppose we will just get used to this, but don't fancy having to explain all of this to a babysitter!
