Connect and Play

It's as easy as USB

You've got to admit, USB drives are handy. So small yet they store so much. Slot one into your Blu-ray player and you can play photo slideshows of your deep sea fishing adventure, video of your brother's wedding, and rock anthems you've downloaded. It's also another easy way to get stuff off your PC and onto your TV, if wireless streaming is all a bit too complicated for you. Linking up with your TV

It's so quick and easy with an HDMI cable and even better, this gives you the best possible picture and sound quality. One cable HDMI connection minimises trailing wires in your home and allows you to take advantage of convenient features such as BRAVIA Sync for operating your TV and Blu-ray player from just one single remote.

I acquired this machine to allow 3D (and 24p) playback which my Home Cinema receiver (Arcam AVR600) does not support. As such, the functionality to split the two HDMI outputs to send video via HDMI1 to the TV and audio via HDMI2 to the Arcam was key and I was pleased to confirm that this works exactly as expected once the appropriate option is selected in the menu. Another useful feature is that the configuration setting for the SPDIF output is separate from the HDMI output allowing the HDMI outputs to pass Dolby Digital/DTS etc whilst the SPDIF is set to output only PCM. This latter feature is useful when connecting a stereo DAC to the SPDIF output (eg when using the BDPS790 as a CD transport) without fear of encoded surround sound formats causing unexpected audio or worse still speaker damage. Finally, on the audio front I successfully used this player to play a multi-channel SACD disc via HDMI (converted into multi-channel PCM by the Sony) into the Arcam with very pleasing results.

On a video front, I tested this player with DVD and 2D and 3D BluRay. All performed excellently, and for someone whose 3D experience was limited to the Sky 3D offering, the increase in clarity and sharpness of the Sony compared to Sky 3D was clearly noticeable. This was of course to be expected given the superior full frame 3D used by the Sony compared to the 'side by side' Sky format but was probably more significant than I had expected.

The machine has also been used to play content from YouTube & iPlayer and connection to my home network (I used a wired connection for superior reliability) and replay performance is excellent with a surprisingly good picture on the BBC iPlayer service.

I've bought a few disc players in my time, both personally and professionally, gone are the days when most of them cost about £250 and were built to last.

Times change and now most players below £500 are lightweight devices and differ only in features not in heft. This is my 4th Blu-ray player and I'm happy to say that all the other 3 are still working. This player does offer a lot of features, certainly some that the sub £100 players do not.

You get the following features

1) Integrated Wi-Fi. No worrying about a separate expensive dongle
2) 3D Blu-ray Playback
3) SACD Playback, an underrated format
4) Dual HMDI sockets (handy for Amps that don't support 3D)
5) 4K upscaling (well actually UHD)

What you don't get any longer... component output, if that's important, this is disappearing from players now.

I'm happy to say this machine plays all discs, DVDs and Blu-rays back very well, it's a very responsive player. It has a number of picture tweaks, found in the options menu, that other cheaper (and older) players do not have, noise reduction, sharpness etc controls. Also this machine can play back 3D Blu-rays and gives you easy access to online content, BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm etc. Although I have to say those are the only 2 providers I regularly use, there are a lot more listed most quite niche in their appeal.

Something else this machine has that I've not had before on a Blu-ray player, touch sensitive buttons that are lit when the machine powers on and these flash as the machine powers on and shuts down.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Out of the four 2012 Blu-ray Disc Players that Sony sell, the BDP-S790 is their top-of-the-range model. It comes neatly packaged in a slim (47.7 x 7 x 27.7 cm) box that contains the following six items, but no HDMI cable:

- Sony BDP-S790 (black)
- AC Power Cord (inconveniently hard-wired into the back of the BDP-S790)
- Remote Control (RMT-B122P, 45 buttons)
- Sony AA Batteries (two of them, in silver)
- Operating Instructions (47 pages)
- European Guarantee Information Document

To be totally honest, when I first took the BDP-S790 out of the box, I was a little disappointed by how thick it is. Measuring 43 x 4.2 x 19.3 cm it's still a slim unit, but it's noticeably chunkier than my previous Sony Blu-ray player. On the front of the BDP-S790 there isn't a single button. Sure, there's a Disc tray and a USB port (Type A) hidden behind a plastic flap, but that's it. So how are you supposed to operate it? Well, once you plug it into the wall all is revealed, as four buttons magically appear on the top of the unit, glowing white through its seemingly solid aluminium casing. These four buttons (power on/standby, open/close, play and stop) are all "soft-touch", which means you don't need to press them in, just touch them lightly.

On the rear of the BDP-S790 there are nine ports. Here's what you get, from left to right:

- LAN (100) Terminal
- USB Jack
- HDMI Out 2 Jack (Audio)
- HDMI Out 1 Jack (Video)
- Line Out (Video) Jack
- Digital Out (Coaxial) Jack
- Line Out (Audio R&L) Jacks
- Digital Out (Optical) Jack
- Control S In / IR In Jack

In an amazing act of generosity, the BDP-S790 is not only Wireless LAN Ready, but actually has Wi-Fi built into it.
