Solid Blu-ray Player 27 Feb 2012
I recently replaced Sony's original Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1, with this updated model. Aside from being much slimmer (and lighter), the new device connects to the internet when firmware updates are available. Startup times are also dramatically faster. Within 5 seconds or less, the device is ready to play discs, or stream movies or TV shows from Netflix, Hulu, and others. I also use Pandora internet radio service through the device. Setting up the accounts was straightforward. I use a wired ethernet connection, but the device can also connect to home networks over WiFi. The picture quality from blu-ray discs is outstanding. The device also does a great job upscaling regular DVDs and the image quality of the streaming services like Netflix and Hulu are similarly impressive.

Not great 24 May 2011
By Mac12
Pros: This is by far the less problematic of players I have experienced with regards to driver mechanism noise. It's not perfect but is quite acceptable. A bit of annoying clunk/clicking but none of that high pitched noise a lot have been plagued with. Nice menu system as usual (although starting to get a bit crowded now).

Cons: I was quite surprised by this player. After trying out a selection of my favourite discs it became apparent I was quite underwhelmed by the performance. Pictures (although sharp) just seemed a little washed out. Motion is handled very well, but there was just something about the picture that disappointed me. DVD's are the same. Just appear flat and boring. It is not the best up-scaler Sony has produced. Their previous players were far superior for this. (I am using A Sony KDL-40EX503 television).

But the worst thing is the audio. Very muted. I needed to turn up the amp quite high and even then I felt like the sound was soft (this is even with Master Audio etc). The unit feels quite cheap but not bad looking. However, the whole player is shiny black plastic which is a nightmare to keep clean and will easily show a lot of micro-scratches over time (using Sony DA2400ES receiver)

The built in wireless is pretty bad. I believe Sony have actually downgraded this from their BDP-S770 unit. There is a lot of freezing and the quality is not great.

I have auditioned many players (from Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Denon etc) so have developed a good comparison.

I personally think Sony have missed the mark here and feel a lot of compromises have been made due to all the other added tech included. But this seems to be something that all the big names are doing also these days. A real shame.

Will be interesting to see what other people make of this player.

Beats the opposition 21 Sep 2011
By AJ
I bought this player after returning a Panasonic unit that had an annoying high pitched whine. The Sony unit was a refreshing change with only a few slight clunks as the head searches before the playing. The wifi connection is good and has never dropped out, unlike the Panasonic that needed to be re-connected every time I tried to use it. My experience is different than the previous reviewer as I am very pleased with the picture quality and sound from my unit which is connected to a Sony KDL-37EX723 TV. The gloss black finish is the only downside but it seems to be the vogue with Blu-ray players and surround sound systems. I would have preferred a matt finish.
