A fast, smart 3D Blu-ray Disc player

The BDP-S5200 Blu-ray Disc player brings immersive Full High Definition 3D to your living room - but that's not all. The player's sensitive Wi-Fi antenna is able to pick up even weak signals from more locations in your home to give you super Wi-Fi - a more stable connection for even smoother streaming of on-demand movies, TV, music and games over the internet. Screen mirroring lets you watch movies, browse photos and listen to music from your smartphone or tablet using your TV's screen and speakers. You can also connect your player to the internet and effortlessly control it with your smartphone or tablet using the TV SideView app.

Exceptional wireless connection with super Wi-Fi

The player's super-sensitive antenna pulls in even weak signals from your Wi-Fi router in another room - or on another floor. So you can enjoy great-quality streaming, no matter where you place the player - it's perfect for seamlessly streaming online music and videos with weak network signals from a distant router.

Take your smartphone to the big screen

You can view your smartphone's videos, photos, apps, web pages and games on your TV. Screen mirroring connects your phone to the television wirelessly so there's no need to hunt around for connecting cables. You'll see exactly what's on your phone or tablet's screen on your TV, with sound from the phone reproduced loud and clear through your TV's speakers. You can even swipe or zoom photos using your phone or tablet's touchscreen. Screen mirroring works with any Miracast-compliant Android smartphone or tablet.

Discover a world of online entertainment

Reached the end of your Blu-ray Disc and DVD library? Hook up to the internet with Wi-Fi to enjoy entertainment straight from the web. It's a bit smaller than I expected, but I'm very pleased with it. Amazon Prime Video and the BBC iPlayer both work excellently through the built in wireless. The box installed easily, connected to wi-fi and then asked to update itself. Set up was swift and painless. It has a good remote control too, solid and responsive, which is most welcome. The HDMI cable auto-switches too (i.e. changes to the correct input when the box is switched on). I'm very pleased with this player.

I had originally ordered the BDPS1200, which I liked, but mine was faulty. So, I decided to return that to grocery store and stick with the range, but step up to this one, as it had built in wifi, plus miracsst and was £27.99 more.

Be aware you will need to order an HDMI lead to hook this up to your TV unless you already have one, as like most things like this, one is not supplied.

Positives:
Size - measurements indicated it was bigger than the BDSP1200, it isn't, still compact and sits perfectly under the 23" LG TV it was purchased to go with. Size means sacrifice so no display on machine, which is not an issue for me.

Internet - set up was incredibly easy for me using wifi, literally just had to put in my wifi password. I am on Superfast BT using a home hub 4. I have also got a wired connection, from where I had the BDPS1200, but haven't tried that yet, as wanted to see wifi in operation. It recorded signal strength for wifi as only being two bars, which made me think I may have streaming issues.

Software - Automatically updated the software and when I clicked on the video menu it downloaded all my apps, so Amazon instant, netflix, iplayer. Once you have entered your account details for netflix and prime it remembers them.

Use - Cannot comment as a blu ray player, as haven't used it as such yet. As a smart player it has been A star. I have used it for iplayer, netflix and Amazon instant, it has played everything I have watched perfectly, despite my initial concerns on the wifi signal looking low. all programmes have played in HD when they are and the screen is crisp and clear for all.

With my Prime account now including instant video (previously LoveFilm) I thought I should upgrade my elderly but excellent Denon Bluray player to take advantage of this. Sony seem to make well reviewed players so I thought I would go for this model as I do not have a 3D TV and it otherwise seems an excellent buy for the money.
Unfortunately, and I have confirmed this with Amazon, the 2014 Sony Bluray players do not connect to Amazon Instant Video so at the moment I am a bit disappointed.
Otherwise it seems a pretty decent player which is easy to set up and use.
I have been promised this will be resolved and will update my review when this happens but felt it best to let anyone in the same situation know.

Edit: 11th April 2014 - now connects to Amazon Instant Streaming and works perfectly even on my pretty average broadband.

This Blu-ray player is perfect for me. However, it might not be for you. That's why I've given this 4 stars rather than 5.

I'll get the elephant in the room out of the way: it's a bit ugly. I'm glad we got that out of the way because now we can focus on what matters.

This is a 3D, WiFi-enabled, smart Blu-ray player. I don't like 3D and don't use the 3D capability but at the time I bought it this was the cheapest, new Sony Blu-ray player I could have bought anywhere (I got lucky and only paid £54.99). Why did I buy Sony? Because I have a Sony TV and I like the way the Sony devices work together and off the same remote control. For what I paid I got a real bargain. For the much more than I paid you'd be forgiven for expecting more for your money.

Where this player is let down is Sony's lack of desirable online content. In its favour, this player lets you access BBC iPlayer, Demand5, Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube amongst others. What you won't get are 4oD and ITV Player which are as much the basic staples of UK television now as their respective networks have been for the last 30 years or so. Not having these is like Sony are trying to sell you a breakfast cereal you can't use milk with; it doesn't start you off on the right footing. That said, I only really use BBC iPlayer and Netflix anyway so it doesn't bother me.

The hardware is pretty capable. If your internet connection is good then you won't be let down by the playback from any of the online content, although BBC's iPlayer app is clunky and annoying regardless but that's not Sony's fault. The Netflix app takes an age to load and I don't know if this is more the fault of Sony or Netflix. Disc loading times are a bit long too but if I'm sitting down to watch something I'm generally not in a hurry.

I love this. Have been yearning for a smart TV but there is nothing wrong with my current HD model so have been um-ing and ah-ing. Then the DVD player packed up, I had a teeny tiny brainwave et voila, I now have a lovely, compact player which not only upscales my DVDs but also, courtesy of the magic of wifi, makes my TV just a little bit 'smart' ie Netflix, Amazon Prime, internet action etc. And the even best-er bit is that it was sooooo easy to set up. Now I'm a modern girl in many ways but technology scares me. New appliances often sit in their boxes for a while before I'm brave enough to let them out because I'm basically afraid that if I plug them in then the house will blow up or the whole internet will disintegrate. Not so with this little beauty - it did the whole set-up / wifi thing quickly and quietly ONCE (yes, there is a tiny gripe) I'd realised that the stingy gits at Sony don't provide an HDMI cable (not even one of those deeply annoying, incredibly short ones and yes, I'm sure that somewhere in the description in tiny letters, after pages of guff when most people have stopped reading, it does say 'no cables of any description beyond basic plug provided because we're tight') and I had waited for the good folk at Amazon to send one out (thank you, next day delivery. And yes, the little basic model that Amazon do does the job nicely).
24 hour delay notwithstanding, I am a very happy bunny.
