A fast, smart 3D Blu-ray Disc player

The BDP-S5200 Blu-ray Disc player brings immersive Full High Definition 3D to your living room - but that's not all. The player's sensitive Wi-Fi antenna is able to pick up even weak signals from more locations in your home to give you super Wi-Fi - a more stable connection for even smoother streaming of on-demand movies, TV, music and games over the internet. Screen mirroring lets you watch movies, browse photos and listen to music from your smartphone or tablet using your TV's screen and speakers. You can also connect your player to the internet and effortlessly control it with your smartphone or tablet using the TV SideView app.

Exceptional wireless connection with super Wi-Fi

The player's super-sensitive antenna pulls in even weak signals from your Wi-Fi router in another room - or on another floor. So you can enjoy great-quality streaming, no matter where you place the player - it's perfect for seamlessly streaming online music and videos with weak network signals from a distant router.

Take your smartphone to the big screen

You can view your smartphone's videos, photos, apps, web pages and games on your TV. Screen mirroring connects your phone to the television wirelessly so there's no need to hunt around for connecting cables. You'll see exactly what's on your phone or tablet's screen on your TV, with sound from the phone reproduced loud and clear through your TV's speakers. You can even swipe or zoom photos using your phone or tablet's touchscreen. Screen mirroring works with any Miracast-compliant Android smartphone or tablet.

Discover a world of online entertainment

Reached the end of your Blu-ray Disc and DVD library? Hook up to the internet with Wi-Fi to enjoy entertainment straight from the web. Stream on-demand movies, catch-up TV and the best of online sites like YouTube, Netflix, Lovefilm, BBC iPlayer and many more, all on the big screen. Or choose from millions of songs to stream and play around your home - with the Sony Entertainment Network, the only limit is your imagination. There's even a web browser and apps for weather, news, games and more.

See movies, sport and more in Full High Definition 3D

If you've got a 3D TV, you'll want to play 3D movies in high quality. A 3D Blu-ray Disc player from Sony is fully compatible with 3D Blu-ray standards and is one of the only ways to enjoy the growing number of 3D movie releases in Full High Definition 1080p quality. Just put on your 3D glasses and immerse yourself in a 3D picture of such detail and clarity it's easy to forget you're watching in a different dimension. You can even convert your favourite TV shows, sports or DVDs from 2D to Full High Definition 3D.

Get more out of TV

Connect your player to the internet, and the TV SideView app lets you effortlessly control your TV with your smartphone or tablet. Easily browse and discover related videos, apps and websites. Or play music and movies stored on other devices. And make viewing more social by tweeting about it from the comfort of your sofa or seeing which movies your Facebook friends are watching.

It's a bit smaller than I expected, but I'm very pleased with it. Amazon Prime Video and the BBC iPlayer both work excellently through the built in wireless. The box installed easily, connected to wi-fi and then asked to update itself. Set up was swift and painless. It has a good remote control too, solid and responsive, which is most welcome. The HDMI cable auto-switches too (i.e. changes to the correct input when the box is switched on). I'm very pleased with this player.

With my Prime account now including instant video (previously LoveFilm) I thought I should upgrade my elderly but excellent Denon Bluray player to take advantage of this. Sony seem to make well reviewed players so I thought I would go for this model as I do not have a 3D TV and it otherwise seems an excellent buy for the money.
Unfortunately, and I have confirmed this with Amazon, the 2014 Sony Bluray players do not connect to Amazon Instant Video so at the moment I am a bit disappointed.
Otherwise it seems a pretty decent player which is easy to set up and use.
I have been promised this will be resolved and will update my review when this happens but felt it best to let anyone in the same situation know.

Edit: 11th April 2014 - now connects to Amazon Instant Streaming and works perfectly even on my pretty average broadband.

This was ordered to replace an old blu-ray player which had given up on me. Very surprised how small this player is but not to worry it really is a great little machine and much better quality than my first Blu-Ray player fits very well anywhere. Loading and play back is quiet quick compared to my old player with no faults so far. I have a full HD TV and the picture quality out strips my old player the quality is fantastic have not yet played a 3D film so this should be interesting End of the day for the price it is great.

The Sony BDPS5200 is my first Blu-ray player. It appears cheaply built (so four stars rather than five) but performs very well and I'm happy to recommend it.

I am a bit of a novice in the world of things to do with TVs and home cinema, and bought this player after moving house and getting a new TV; I thought I might as well put the DVD player away and buy a new Blu-ray player so everything was up-to-date. This one seemed from internet reviews to be good value so I paid up and bought it.

I was surprised, and a little disappointed, when I opened the box. This is a small player, about half the size of the DVD player it replaced, and the feel of the plastic case is cheap; it flexes under fairly light finger pressure, for example. The remote too is a bit disappointing, again about half the size I was expecting. So first impressions were not encouraging.

Once out of the box and connected it easily picked up a wireless connection to the home network and - another negative point - downloaded an update to its software (why didn't it ship with this installed?). The information supplied with the player is minimal and the web address supplied to get a fuller description of how to use the player didn't take me anywhere useful (instead, try http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4476203411.pdf for a PDF copy of the manual or http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/BDP-S5200#Manuals for the player's support page). So second impressions weren't encouraging either, and by this point I was becoming rather disheartened with my purchase.

Happily things improved from that point on. Put a DVD in and it loads up quickly and plays very well.

What a fantastic piece of kit. I've wanted a Blu-Ray player for a while (playing DVDs and Blu-Rays on the PS3 is ok but it's noisy) and this works really nicely, good picture, quiet, etc. But it doesn't stop there. It comes pre-loaded with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, BBC iPlayer and various other online facilities. It also allows me to access my home network, I can view media stored on my PC using Plex. This box puts paid to my AppleTV and my (recently purchased) ChromeCast. My only gripes are the remote which is too small, some of the buttons (especially the four-way control) are too close together and I hate those rubbery buttons AND the virtual keyboard which is so slow, doesn't allow you to wrap around (so if you're on P and way to go to E you have to go back across the keyboard) and I don't understand why the password can't be viewed whilst entering, get one character wrong and you have to start all over again. But they're minor gripes. A fantastic little box, so many features, for a great price.

I have only had this a few weeks and upgraded from a very old DVD player. So fancy-technology wise I am not the best to compare. The setup is very easy and can all be done wirelessly; so no having to plug this into the router for setup or updates. I have used BBC iplayer a few times and it runs perfectly. I have had no streaming issues but I do have fibreoptic internet connection. The system itself is very small - about a quarter of the size of my old DVD player and extremely light. It has a pyramid top so you cannot balance anything on top of it. The blu-ray quality is just fantastic; I have a fairly old TV, 6 years old and yet the quality on it is brilliant. DVDs (mostly Disney films) have been played a good few times on this as well and once again no problems. The only "problem" as such is that the menu's do seem to be slower than expected; but I can deal with this. For me this is perfect and hopefully it will last me many more years.
