It's also another easy way to get stuff off your PC and onto your TV, if wireless is all a bit too complicated for you.

Linking up with your TV

It's so quick and easy with an HDMI cable and even better, this gives you the best possible picture and sound quality. One cable HDMI connection minimises trailing wires in your home and allows you to take advantage of convenient features such as BRAVIA Sync for operating your TV and Blu-ray player from just one single remote.

Saves Space

Seriously slim

It gets busy down there under your telly. Digiboxes, games consoles, and home theatre kits where exactly do you stick your new Blu-ray player? With space so tight, you'll be wanting one that's super slim and light, capable of squeezing in to any spare spot or even going on a shelf. You'll also want it to match up with the new range of BRAVIA televisions and as you can see, it does that perfectly.

Great player 10 Feb 2012
Took a chance on this and bought it before reading any reviews. Compared to other players with built in wifi this is well priced, quality is very very good. Setup was a breeze, including wifi setup thanks to having WPS support. After an update it has iPlayer support which works very well (including HD) but sadly does not have 4 on Demand or ITV Player as of yet (Demand 5 is on there too). Design of the player is nice, no display to speak off but has a very small profile, much smaller than the 380.

Menu system is just like on the PS3 only slightly more sluggish. The small remote works well and it there is also an Android app that can be used as a remote, very useful for typing into the search box on iPlayer.

The s390 has DLNA support and has played HD videos off my NAS without problem. The only downside to this is there is no DIVX support!! You may need to encode as XVID instead, this has knocked a star off for me. Haven't tried USB support yet, but I understand it will work with NTFS.

One thing that did cross my mind when setting it up, for not a lot more you could have a PS3 which does have DIVX support. When you consider this doesn't come with an HDMI cable but the PS3 does, the price gap isn't that big!

Overall great blu-ray player, upscales DVD's well, nice interface and so far no problems.

Edit:
Have used the LoveFilm app since the weekend, menu is different to the PS3 version (it's better in my opinion). Quality is very good, LF isn't HD but it still looks great from this player. Currently there is no ITV or C4 player.

Single day use 7 April 2012

Sony Blu ray player BDPS390; have just been using for a day so a little early perhaps but if there is any problem I will update this review, connected via hdmi v1.4 to Panasonic plasma TX-P42G30

Internal wifi worked quickly on WPA2 802.11n network, downstairs from a small router in 2 bed semi, signal strength varies from 2-8Mbps with perhaps avg.5mbps on a 10mbit connection, seems to be a little slow loading intial apps or internet content but streams SD content very well, HD content streams with some pauses so will consider wiring into cable ethernet (HD content on wired tv streams well in comparison).

DVDs look great, much better than normal, there is a little visual noise there but this is only when viewed up close. Also appears to upscale SD content streamed over LAN - compared to Panasonic TV inbuilt upscaling (v good) of same feature the Sony was sharper and looked livelier on same low def content.

Loading blu rays takes a little time, unit complained of lack of internal storage for playing Avatar, I do not know if storage of "Live" content can be turned off, otherwise I will have to pop a usb memory stick in unit for local storage, start time may be influenced by toggling internet "lookup" feature on and off mine is on at the moment - but start time I think is perfectly reasonable for my needs - if I am about to watch a 2 hour movie does a few extra seconds loading really effect me.

Blu ray's produced excellent picture, sound was definite improvement but only listened via internal 20w speakers so little relevance there, very clean picture, very fluid motion, looks great.

Unit starts quickly, handled HDMI CEC control via panasonic remote just great and very convenient, main menu screen loads quickly - a horizontal affair of media groups and vertical lists of features. Main screen loads quickly seems ok speed (not as quick as tv net features), layout is not as friendly as vierra connect. There is probably more content on sony internet than vierra connect on panasonic, has love film, the channel 5 app has lots of content, ehow is great much enjoyed by family, lots of free content hidden in interface.

Unit has a another menu screen when "SEN" button is pressed, displays a couple more things than main menu in a significantly more user friendly interface - I would use this feature but it is appalingly slow on my blu ray, I do not know if this is caused by the wifi connection or the units processor being over taxed by the GUI regalia. Sony entertainment network is nicely layed out and seems to have lots of features.

I think thats about it, in summary - Speed ok, Interface Good, Features Great, Blu ray Great, Upscaling Great, Wifi speed ok, setting it up good.

The standard across Blu Ray players over the last six months has increased considerably, almost to the extent that audio and video from these players have for the most part very little to differentiate them. To this end when I looked at replacing my old Sony PLAYER, I had a number of criteria in addition to the standard features (particularly with the growing availability of high speed broadband) that I was looking for.

1. Wireless connection (without a dongle or other accessory)
2. The ability to stream media for other sources (ideally with DLNA)
3. A wide variety of online services (such as Netflix etc.)
4. A wide variety of supported formats (MPEG 2, MPEG 4, XviD etc.)

The Sony ticked all of these boxed or so I though but after hours of the unit rebooting and having read (and like everyone I hate doing this) every page of the manual in detail and with a lot of playing about I found the following (despite updating to the latest firmware).

1. The wireless is a breeze to setup but unlike every other wireless device in my house, the connection quality and throughput is terrible. I have a Beklin 750N in the NEXT room and the unit has what can only just about be called a stable connection (similar to one other device I own but that device is on the other side of the house).

2. So the system has DLNA and can see my network correctly. It sees my three WD Live boxes, my Alienware laptop and more importantly my 6GB WD MyBook Live Duo where I have centralized the storage of all of my audio and video files. This allows me to access them on any device at any time (even when not at home). What Sony did not state in the system spec and what is buried at the very back of the user manual is that the do not allow streaming of 80% of the formats the box "supports". Therefore I cannot play any of the media from my shared storage on this unit and furthermore, when you try, the system hangs and takes about two minutes to reboot. I have spent a lot of time converting all of my home DVD's and Blu Ray's to digital format and this was my key reason for buying this device.

3. Moving beyond point 1 and 2 and looking at the online services, I again hit another roadblock. Most of the standard services out there (and which all come by default with the WD Live) such at Netflix, iPlayer etc. are not present on this unit. In fact outside of some German radio options and other foreign stations, there are no big names at all. Sony do have the Sony Entertainment Network (which is being positioned as the way forward) but when I try to connect to this, it states the service is not available in my region (Ireland). There is no eta when it will be.

4. As previously stated the unit does boast quite a diverse range of supported formats. Unfortunately as it doesn't stream them that is of little use to me. The only saving grace here is that I can copy the movies I want to view to USB and play them via the USB port on the front of the unit (without restriction). This is an acceptable workaround (as I continue to convert any new DVD's I get to digital form or simply buy a digital copy without disc) but why I can't stream and have to go from one room to my living room with a USB key is a backward step.

So to briefly summarize, the quality of the output, both audio and video is excellent. The unit is compact and sleek looking and is very quiet. Setup for the most part is a breeze. Load time are good but not great and the user interface, although a little cluttered is easy to navigate. However, when it comes to those features which may sway many buyers, forget it. I can only hope that Sony will lift the restriction on streaming, introduce additional online services via a future firmware update and improve the quality of the wireless connection but for now IT DOES NOT REALLY DO WHAT IT SUGGESTS IT DOES with regard to extras.

Edit: I have not referenced Love Film here as this is not available in Ireland so I would not expect to see it anyway.
