Sony BDP S1200 is an excellent Blu-ray and DVD Player with Smart Features like Internet TV, and can access Amazon Instant, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, Sony Entertainment Network, YouTube etc. It's a decent player with a great low price but when the price is low it must have come with some "price," right? OK let's start the review.

What's In the Box?
Sony BDP-S1200 Blu-ray/DVD Player
1x AC Adaptor (AC-M1208WW)
1x AC Power Cord (Mains lead)
1x Remote control
2x R03 size AAA batteries for the remote

HDMI (cable not included)
USB Input
Coaxial Output (Cable not included)
Wired Ethernet connection (Cable not included)

Stylish Design, Size and Weight
Sony BDP S1200 has a stylish glossy black design with angled - partly mirrored top, The player is compact and at the size of a 12" laptop, the exact size is 10.4 x 1.7 x 7.8" / 264.2 x 43.0 x 199.0 mm but less than a kilogram (0.9 kg). It's almost like holding a thick plastic case of that size.

User Interface
The user interface can be little confusing but easy to navigate once you familiarise it. I am talking both the navigation on the screen and the remote. If you are familiar with PlayStation you can easily understand the Xcross Media Bar menu, it's very similar. I have to say the user interface is a bit outdated, I guess it's made when Netflix was the big name in streaming video market...

USB Reader
At the front (right side) of the player there is a USB socket, and to which, you can connect your USB stick. I played an episode of Constantine TV series in HD - Matroska video - MKV (.mkv) file format, and it played smoothly and I am really impressed by that.

After having little success with a LG Blu-ray player, this model seemed like a good alternative.

This little player actually exceeded my expectations in pretty much every respect. The picture quality is sharp and detailed and during action sequences there is no tracer/distortion, something that I notice on my other Blu-ray player that is two years old.

The BDPS1200 comes with a robust little remote control and a power adapter only. No HDMI cable, but this is common with most home entertainment devices these days. It does not have a display screen, however you can access details onscreen if necessary. Personally I like not having a digital display on it as the player is used in a bedroom, the only light on the device is the on button which is actually situated on the top with the light on the front edge. Next to it is the eject button, both are part of the same large flat triangular button, and these are the only controls that exist on the unit. All other functions are accessed by its small remote. The connections on the back are HDMI and an Ethernet port for connecting to your broadband router. On the front is a usb port.

The player comes with quite a few apps, including Youtube, IPlayer, Demand 5 Netflix, Love Film and Amazon movie streaming. Facebook is included also. There is even a Netflix button on the remote. The internet connection is easy and relatively quick to set up, so easy in fact that I haven't even read the manual yet. In addition to online access the player copes with pretty much all the file formats you can throw at it, MKV, MP4, XVID, etc which is really handy. The only down side I have found is that it will not read My 64gb SD card (in a USB adapter).

This unit plays Blue-Ray, DVD and CDs. It will also display pictures as a slide show with music from a memory stick or CD. It allows access to various Apps such as weather and games but these appear to need to be downloaded each time you need them. Quick access to world internet radio. BBC I-player works well. Excellent picture and sound quality from DVDs (don't have any Blue-Ray) but the Sony menu system is frustrating.

To access internet options you have to plug it in to your server (no Wi-Fi) but this works perfectly. The instructions, as supplied are pretty useless and really let Sony down. It comes with just the unit and mains lead/transformer. It has hung once (in 2 hour's use) fixed by turning mains off and on again as the on/off switch was unresponsive. I bought this from Argos after a frustrating swapping of emails with John Lewis about their 'never knowingly undersold'.

This player is very small and has an odd shaped top so you could not stack anything above it; it does feel solid however. On the rear it has HDMI output, Lan socket, power in, and an audio out. A USB socket is placed on the front. A data stick is recognised and read instantly. From cold start to playing a DVD is about 27 seconds. This can be set to a shorter period but the unit uses more power when in sleep mode.

Bought this player purely for the Netflix ability. I have a four year old Sony Smart TV and BDP-S380 disc player and despite trying to make sense of configurations and system updates I couldn't get it to find the Netflix app. After looking at the price of the Apple TV, Roku and other devices the Sony BDP seemed like the most cost effective purchase for the purpose.

As far as a player goes its pretty good. Its a lot faster to turn on and display the menu/load discs. The user interface is identical to that of the older S380 (based on the PS3 menus I believe) and is a doddle to use and setup. Mine is connected by Ethernet to the internet router and it found this very easily. Also as with the previous player BraviaLink (or CEC) allows use of TV remote to control the BD player. The remote that came with the BD player remote will also control my Sony TV and some other makes after tapping in a specific sequence of buttons.

Netflix works very well, although the log-on process took its time due to lack of proper keyboard. It can be a bit slow to load a selected program, but that's probably more my internet connection than the device. Disc playback is brilliant, loading speed is very quick and I can't fault the picture of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.

Overall I'm happy with the player and it does the job albeit with a few niggles in my view:

- Newly redesigned remote does not include number buttons, shame this as the number buttons on my TV remote make letter input for the TV very easy.
- No front display on the device. The on screen display is very good and can be accessed via remote, however I like to be able to glance at the time progressed through the disc or program without doing this.
