I was late getting this game, waiting for the Platinum version at a cheaper price. On the whole this is a very good game, great graphics and variety of sports to play, from swimming and all the athletics disciplines to gymnastics and archery.
Particular good graphics are playing the 800m or 1500m track, feels like you're really running in the race. The equestrian show jumping is good fun also, and is not as easy as it looks. Perhaps the game you will find yourself playing the most is the Skeet(clay pigeon shooting), it's quite hard to master, but will have you sitting there with your eyeballs glued to the screen trying to time your shots correctly!!
The downside is that most of the race games and the swimming is just a frantic lot of button-bashing, and if you slow for a moment your player gets left behind and can't catch up. Not a recommended gameplay style for people with hand mobility problems like I occasionally get. The other games that don't require button-bashing are very enjoyable though.

Fun:
Athens offers an array of sports to try - athletics, swimming, equine sports, weight lifting, shooting and archery. As one reviewer writes, the downside of the game is that so many of the events require hard core button tapping and for me the swimming is a no go as I feel like my hand will fall off after a single lap. It's the only game I've played on the PS2 where you can pick up an injury in reality. Thankfully the game offers so much more and the decathlon soon becomes addictive. By the second week I had world records in the high jump, pole vault and long jump ! Two player mode is great fun and I can recommend the archery after a night at the pub as co-ordination is vital if you are to succeed. The graphics are great and it's one of the non football games I don't regret buying.

Come on-this game is only a penny on Amazon! I took a punt and it was well worth it. I got a varied game with great (if not a little creepy) graphics and superb gameplay, which really comes into its own when playing against friends and family. The controls are simple button bashers, which haven't changed much since the days of Hyper sports on the old ZX spectrum. Classic sport gaming at its finest! The athletes do look like the walking dead though!
