What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision Review

Why should only larger flatscreens be well-built, have a decent digital specification and boast a decent dollop of style? That seems to be the thinking behind this 20in Sony LCD, which has the fit, finish and features to match many of its bigger Bravia siblings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable Braviscinema, 12 Jun 2008
Compared with my last set, this model is extremely light in weight with a stunning picture and wonderful sound quality. Very slimline this 20 inch widescreen TV is stylish with loads of quality features. The auto-set up for both digital and analogue took less than 5 minutes. The tools facility gives you a choice of manual or auto settings, with the automatic constant sound facility, freeze picture and non-reflective screen most welcome. Would recommend you set your picture to the Vivid mode. Good instruction booklet and easy to use remote control (batteries included). On/Off facility both on the remote and on the front panel. Although my set will remain in my living room, this TV is easy for moving from room to room or place to place. If you click on the Amazon help for larger image and other views, the window opens to reveal the slimline look in evidence.
Very happy with my purchase and no hesitation in recommending this Sony Bravia treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little TV, 15 Aug 2008
We purchased this TV recently and have been very pleased, great picture, clear sound. Perhaps the best feature is the Steady Sound feature that stops the volume shooting up during the advert breaks, well done Sony for finally offering a solution to this annoying aspect of commercial television other than reaching for the volume button during every advert break.

The only downside is that it is not wall mountable, but we knew this in advance so not a problem for us, but others may want to bear this in mind before buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture and sound. Controls could be better, 26 Mar 2009
By Martin (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
I went for this TV as a result of a Which? report that basically stated that this was the best small factor TV around at the moment (Panasonic being best for larger TVs). My selection was also governed by reviews from the web stating that the sound was excellent. It was for this reason that I did not go for the equivalent Samsung TV (since it had the same picture quality, but was slated for poor sound).

I definitely made the best choice and would highly recommend it.

I was a bit unsure about the shape of the TV due to the speakers at the bottom of the unit, but once placed in our bedroom, it looks great and I have no issues with it.

The picture quality is excellent and the freeview tuner manages to pick up far more digital channels than I expected (when you consider that I am using a bog standard loft aerial as its source). I may upgrade the loft aerial to further improve the signal.

The sound is also excellent with a rich definition. One of the fantastic features of this TV is that it uses 'smart sound' so the annoying high rise in volume during the advert breaks is no longer apparent. I don't have to keep reaching for the remote all the time.

Although it wasn't strictly necessary, the DVD player I have attached to it is linked with an HDMI cable. The picture quality when playing DVDs is stunning.

I only use the HDMI input, but there are a multitude of input options - including PC attachments if you want to.

The down side to the TV is in the controls. The remote is larger than I would have liked. The way the TV is controlled and setup is not intuitively obvious and quite a few features require that you read the manual to figure it out. Having said that, I have already got used to it, but I usually don't need to read the manual at all unless I am trying something above and beyond the usual.

Initial setup of the channels was a doddle. The TV scanned and set up the analogue and digital channels with no problems.

It is a very light TV, so if I wanted to, it would be easy to transport it to other rooms.

One thing to bear in mind if you also want this TV for use in the bedroom. Keep the TV relatively low down as the picture starts to darken quite a rapidly if it is placed higher than a metre above head height. The horizontal viewing angle is brilliant, but as with most LCD screens, the vertical viewing angle suffers. This may or may not be a problem if you like to watch TV lying down.

This TV is maybe slightly more expensive than similar models, but the extra is definitely worth it in my opinion.
