PSP goes on a diet,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sony PSP 2000 Series Slim and Lite Handheld Console (Black) (Video Game)
The new PSP is 19% thinner and 30% lighter. Should definitely notice the difference as soon as its in your hands. Here are the pros and consPros: + Video Out to your TV. Watch your UMD movies and Games on your screen. This is the perhaps the best feature of any handheld. + Much lighter, feels really good in your hands. + The D-Pad has been upgrades. Fighting Game Lovers rejoice! + The analog nub also feels more responsive. + Buttons are raised making them easier to click. + The LCD is brighter, has a higher refresh rate and the colors are more vibrant. + UMD games load faster. + The memory has been doubled in this unit to allow developers to build caches they can then use to make games load much faster. + Even games that dont implement caches, load faster due to an automatic new caching done by the system. + Ability to eat less battery life. Cons: - Over priced when you think that americans are getting psp console, game, family guy umd and a memery stick for cheaper than this. - Only black to choose from where are the silver and white ones that japan and USA get. - UMD tray may not impress. It feels cheaper.

I always wanted a PSP from they first came out but never made the jump as I was always happy with my PS2 but last week I pushed the boat out and picked up a black PSP. First impressions were very positive, its glossy finish looks superb and that screen is just a work of art. A gorgeous little machine overall. The battery life doesn't appear to be outstanding, maybe 2 hours between charges but I can live with that. I haven't sampled movies or music on it yet but the graphics on the games I am playing are just astounding, easily surpassing those of my PS2. The WI-FI connection was as easy as pie to set up also. I deducted a point for 2 reasons. 1 - The front of the console is superbly built but the back is not. It feels cheap and tacky and would probably explode into a million pieces of dropped. The UMD latch also opens a bit too easily for my liking. 2 - The location and function of the Power/Hold switch is annoying. When using the 'R' button it is quite easily to push the power button up turning the console off (annoying when you haven't saved your game). Overall though i'm definitely chuffed with my purchase.

Having owned the previous PSP for nearly a year I traded mine in for the new 'Slim & Light' version a few weeks ago. I'm an adult that travels a lot so for me the reduction in weight (by a 1/3) makes a nice difference in my bag and the ability to charge from USB also means I no longer need to carry the charger on longer trips. Sony claim to have made the internal electronics more efficient so the smaller battery doesn't affect 'play time' and I have to agree; if anything I get more use out of a single full charge - maybe as much as 15-20% over the last model. The web browser is also faster (and doesn't seem to run out of memory any more) as well as games loading a little quicker. The original felt so substantial that at first the new one seems flimsy - but don't be fooled into thinking light can't be strong, it really is just as sturdy. On the plus side, the weight, screen, battery life, USB charging & extra memory are all nice to have and I really welcome the fact that there are no dead pixels on the screen of the new one. A neutral point for me is the video out - I suspect it won't be used much for games but if you have video or family shots then it makes a nice portable player for that sort of thing and the MS Duo cards are now coming down in price (I have 2 4GB ones and watch quite a bit of video on the move). Why not five stars? I'm not sure I like the shiny back instead of the old matt finish and USB charging only works in 'USB mode' meaning you can't use it while charging via USB or charge via USB if the battery goes completely flat. The other comment that 'it still only plays the same old games' is a platform decision, if you don't like the games get a different portable player. I love my PSP for First Person shooters, videos and podcasts downloaded directly to my PSP at home.
