I (used to) love my Vaio! (updated again), 7 Jan 2010
This review is from: Sony VAIO NW20SF/S 15.5inch Notebook (Core 2 Duo T6600 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium) (Electronics)
Jan 2010:
I was nervous about making a big purchase without seeing it first, but I have had no problems thus far. I bought this model at the end of December 09 direct from Amazon, not Expansys, at a slightly lower price, and having taken quite some time to research, read reviews and try out many brands & models.
Essentially, I love my new Vaio. It starts up quickly, is really fast when using memory-sucking applications, and the one touch Web button is useful. I am certainly a Core2Duo convert.
The battery has lasted about 2 to 3 hours between charges, which is adequate for my needs (daily home user).
The keyboard is lovely to use and the styling, though not desperately important to me, is aesthetically pleasing.
The touch pad does take some getting used to, as does the widescreen. My previous laptop was a regular 15" screen.
The preinstalled free trial of anti virus software is pointless - you can get a fully functioning program from AVG's website for free.
The screen quality is great, but quite reflective if you have your back to a window. It does move quite far back though to allow you to compensate for this.
The laptop is light and easy to carry around in my bag, but does get quite hot on the left underside after using for a while, presumably from the hard disk turning. Perhaps a SATA hard drive would have been a good choice, but may have increased the price.
The wifi works brilliantly - infinitely better than my previous machine & better than my fairly new iPod Touch. I like that it is n as well - a good bit of future proofing.
The initial set up was quick and easy. A little cheeky that recovery disks are not supplied - you have to create your own restore backup.
The CD drive is not super fast when importing songs to iTunes, but as a leisure user this is not a huge issue to me.
UPDATE Feb 2010:
Two stars removed for mechanical failure!
The mouse touch pad is now barely working. I had to disable the scrolling about 3 days after the laptop arrived as it was really annoying.
The DVD drive has failed & according to the machine doesn't exist. Nothing I do seems to fix it.
Sending it back tomorrow. Amazon customer care were brilliant and are paying for the courier to collect it, and are organising me a replacement (which will probably arrive super fast) without any fuss or questions asked. Five starts for customer care! Shame that I have to exchange the laptop when I've barely had it two months... Not what you usually expect from Sony.
UPDATE March 2010:
One star given back for the replaced one - it works very well, only the occasional hiccup with the mouse pad which I expected.
Amazon customer care were fabulous when replacing this.

Good value for money, 30 Nov 2009
This review is from: Sony VAIO NW20SF/S 15.5inch Notebook (Core 2 Duo T6600 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium) (Electronics)
I purchased this on Saturday night got it on Monday morning.Excellent Amazon service.
VGN-NW20SF is good value for money. This configuration runs very smoothly with windows 7.
I waited for this as I got bored with XP.This is a good improvement.
I did get 50 pound cheaper Vaio but it was slow, I returned it.
I would suggest this should be benchmark configuration to run windows 7 , anything less you wouldn't enjoy as it will be slow.

I expected more from a Vaio, 10 Jan 2010
This review is from: Sony VAIO NW20SF/S 15.5inch Notebook (Core 2 Duo T6600 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium) (Electronics)
Let me start by saying I am rating the laptop, (not Amazon and their legendary ability to manage almost instant delivery!)
Having been impressed by previous Sony Vaio laptops I was pleasantly surprised by the new Sony Vaio line up.
However, this is not all it might first appear to be.
First of all it is a very capable and fast laptop.
It has a good spec.
It works well.
Windows 7 is a breeze to set up and I was on-line within minutes. A great improvement over vista.
There is a trial version of office included as well.
However, I expect all of this and more from a normal laptop.
So the big question is...
What is the extra sparkle that makes this a Sony Vaio and justifies the higher price?
Well the case has a nice textured effect, they keyboard is very positive and easy to use, the screen is very good for watching DVD's etc.
However it has to be said that it is (for a new laptop) very bulky and heavy with a not very good battery life.
So to conclude.
It is a very capable laptop, that is of high quality and built to the high standards that one has come to expect from Sony.
However it is heavy, bulky and does not have the design flair I would expect from a Vaio.
Hence the low rating.
