Manufacturer's Description

USB 2.0 PCI Express Card

Add More USB Connections Without Compromise

Everybody's got USB peripherals"keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, joysticks, digital cameras, iPod mobile digital devices, external drives"and there never seems to be enough ports on a computer to plug all of them in at the same time. Problem solved"install a Sonnet Allegro Express USB in your computer to add five more USB 2.0 ports! Considering a hub? Consider the tradeoffs. Every peripheral you plug in has to share a single port's bandwidth (potentially affecting the devices' performance), and you may have to plug it into a power outlet as well as your computer in order to operate some devices.

Sonnet's Allegro Express USB adds five full-bandwidth, high-speed USB connections to your computer without the need for an external box or AC power adapter"no trade-offs necessary. Each of this card's five powered ports supports bus-powered peripherals (devices that work without a separate power supply, including some external drives and scanners) and hi-speed data transmission. With no drivers to install, this card offers simple plug and play installation in Mac and Windows computers. Allegro Express USB adds USB connectivity, outside and in, without compromise

It really is a simple device, easy to install, quite inexpensive and it gives you four extra external USB 2.0 ports on your Mac Pro. For me, an added benefit was that my iPhone was no longer being recognized by any of the regular front or back USB ports for quite some time, still don't know why but as it now works great on this card, no problems either. Well worth it.

Don't fear opening your computer 25 Feb 2009

This was installed in my Mac Pro and it worked immediately with no glitches whatever. Power down, unplug, open the side cover, and choose slot number 4 or 3. Remove the metal dust cover from the opening where your four USB ports will poke through the back panel. (This requires removing 2 screws). Gently slide the PCI express card into the expansion slot, making sure the metal tab slides into the same slot that held the metal dust cover you removed before. Reinstall the locking bar that has the 2 screws you undid before. Put the side cover back on and lock it. Plug in, power up, and you now have 4 more USB ports. There's no software to install, and if you're a Mac Pro user there should be no trouble at all.

Works perfectly with Mac Pro 1,1-- 2 x dual core 2.66 GHz 28 Oct 2009

The card worked out of the box in my Mac Pro. The package includes clear instructions for installing in various model Macs with PCIx slots, including recommendations for which slots to use as well as instructions for using the Expansion Slot Utility.app to set the slot configuration if needed (/System/Library/CoreServices/). Of course, I can't say anything about reliability as I've only had it installed a few hours; I'll update this review after a few months of use. The whole process of installing took about 15 minutes. (NOTE: the 5th port is internal so it's not very useful.)

You can never have to many USB ports 21 Feb 2009

I installed this card in my Mac Pro. It was quite easy to do. A card is better than external ports (for some you even need separate power). Works fine. Price was okay (for a PCI Express).
