This recital by renowned soloist David Russell presents the works of four Latin American masters of the guitar: Augustín Barrios Mangoré, Manuel María Ponce, Héctor Ayala, Armando Neves, and Jorge Morel.
One of the great pioneers of classical guitar, Augustín Barrios Mangoré was one of the first Latin American guitarists to appear successfully in Europe and one of the first guitarists to record. Featured on this recording is Mangoré's "Maxixe" which is based on the Brazilian dance that became popular in Rio de Janeiro in the 1870s. Manuel María Ponce was one of the most distinguished and influential figures in Mexican music. He arranged Tres Cancíones Populares Mexicanas from 1925-26 for Segovia.
Two of the pieces on the disc written by Argentine-American guitarist and composer Jorge Morel are dedicated to David Russell, "Recuerdos del Caribe" is filled with the flavors and rhythms of the West Indies, whilst "Mangoré" is a tribute to Augustín Barrios Mangoré. Even though his career was focused on tango, Héctor Ayala still had a thorough understanding of other Latin American musical styles, as demonstrated by his "Serie Americana".

Format:Audio CD
If you like Classical Guitar music this is a must from a very accomplished musician. Recently saw David Russell at a concert in Cheltenham and he give a truly excellent performance. This CD includes an excellent selection of Latin American guitar music.

It's hard to go wrong by buying David Russell's recordings. I'm not a huge fan of Ponce, but the Hector Ayala pieces more than make up for that. This is music that I'll be reluctant to remove from my car when I swap out my CDs.

Virtuosity and variety!

I heard David Russell on NPR and, despite the tinny quality of my radio's speakers,I knew I had to buy his CDs. The range of his music is broad, from Bach to Celtic and Gaelic to Latin music, and all are worth your attention, but the Latin album Sonidos Latinos is the best.
Russell is worth listening to for the beauty of his music and the skill of his guitar playing, but I confess that the thing that impresses me most is that, unlike even the best guitar players I have heard, he never "squeaks"!
If you love listening to classic guitar, DO buy this album.If you are a guitar player, AVOID it---you will despair at ever achieving the level of his skill.
