  • In a frantic battle to the chequered flag, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sees Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in mediaeval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favourites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will race around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in AiAi's case – a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium. And winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado, allowing a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don't become a threat to that number one position… Players can battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown. Can Amigo scramble Dr. Eggman? Will AiAi say bye-bye to Tails? Are you gonna be faster than Sonic? The race will start in 2010…

Really addictive. If you like mario kart and crash kart racing(crash bandicoot) you'll love this. Also its good for casual gamers like me who havent the patience with complicated controls and just wanna play and have some fun but it's not too simplistic and once you turn the GP levels up to advanced or expert its a real challenge.Theres actually a trophy glitch with this game where you beat all the staff ghost times on each lap and arnt awarded the trophy. It's being talked about in the internet forums,Hopefully SEGA will sort it out and update the game.

Here be my quick down and dirty review of Sonic and Sega All Star Racing. There's no story to concentrate on really so this'll just be a point by point good and bad of the gameplay, graphics and sound. Hope it proves usefully to you!

THE GOOD:
* - Sharp and colourful graphics that represent each characters world and style very well.
* - Nice modes which include your usual grand prix and single race efforts and the less than ordinary mission mode. All Great stuff. All of these modes will reap you some fat virtual monies and money = prizes in the way of new tracks and some of your favourite old and new Sega mascots such as Ryo and Alex Kidd!
* - Controls are well thought out and minimalist and afford you great control when tearing up the track. Cornering utilises a "Double Dash" style drift system that just rolls of the thumbs and into the game with little to no hassle.
* - characters each have their own powers as well as a bunch of powers that are universal to all the characters such as rolling bombs and turbos. Character specific powers come in the form of Super Sonic and Super Shadow tearing up the track to Ai Ai, of monkey ball fame, blazing around, friends in tow, in a big old monkey ball crushing his opponents.
* - Great respect has been paid to long time fans of Sega franchises with authentic animations and voices and music ripped from original games and jazzed up. Not to mention a fine old line up of characters past and present, common and uncommon. The whole thing is a great little package for retro fans when coupled with the likes of Megadrive Collection (and Sega Superstar Tennis to a lesser extent.)
* - Online is good - not great - but a welcome addition.

People love to have something to compare it to, it happens everywhere and for a long time. How many times do we hear `The Next Leona Lewis' when talking about The X Factor? It's the same with the gaming industry; when Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing first came out, practically all reviews put it up against the long standing Mario Kart, due to its colourful characters and crossover of long time favourites. But is Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing the Mario Kart clone that everyone makes it out to be?

Starting with the visuals the game doesn't use the `fuzzy film' effect that plagued Mario Kart Wii, judging purely on the Playstation 3 version the visuals are crisp, colourful, bright and streams beautifully. There are no slowdowns or jumps in quality, all characters are designed nicely and there's a great amount of detail gone into each race track. Sure the PS3 version doesn't offer a spectacular HD experience and some human faces look a little too fake but the quality is still far above the average. Music also hits a high note; being very well composed, full of energy and cheery to keep with the spirit of the game. Although they do have tunes from previous Sega games, most of it is post-2000 (so no retro Sonic tunes I'm afraid). Voice acting is decent and give personality to the various racers where needed. The game also has a commentator that lets the player know what's going on in the race, admittedly at times he can be annoying but he does have some funny one-liners that will make you chuckle one you get into the light hearted nature of the title. Controls are also reliable, again using the PS3 as reference, all buttons work precisely as they should with no delay between analog stick turning and the character turning itself.

I'm 55 and I've got better things to do than play video games. That said; when I'm dragged away from my chores by someone else who should know better, I can't put the controller down.

p.s. I'm rubbish at it and I don't care, it's still great fun

Sonic and sega all stars is a fresh and innovative introduction to he ps3 kart racing genre perhaps as far as i remember the only one... the characters are very fluid, have a minimum story and very good visuals. Anyone like myself who has grown up playing sega games would be aware of the characters present in the game especially sonic, dr eggman the arch nemesis, alex kidd, ryo and many more.. what i really like was the different racing tracks inspired the by game the house of the dead there actually are levels of dr curiens mansions, brings back excitingv and positive memories. even for the newer generation people who arent familiar with sonic or the sega characters the game is quite good i must say . the driving mechanics are pretty smooth and easy to learn and adapt especially the drifting part, the tracks are various and plenty of fun to play and the multiplayer modes quite exciting i must say though that the online community is not active to as we would like to racing with friends is always a charm but finding a lot of people to challenge is a hard task.
Overall a very good entrant to the kart racing genre and something ps3 has needed for quite some while a good game overall i would rate it 4/5.
