Something of a reluctant performer, retiring from touring less than ten years after commencing his career, Tom Lehrer achieved a degree of popularity even he could not have envisaged. It was whilst studying at mathematics at Harvard University that he began writing comic songs, usually for the entertainment of his fellow students, but such was the reaction he decided it was worth spending a little money to record Songs By Tom Lehrer professionally. He also pressed up four hundred copies which were sold to friends around the university. Then word of mouth began to take over, and mail orders began arriving from all across the United States.... His breakthrough in the UK came from an unlikely source; a personal endorsement by HRH Princess Margaret, with his early album being reissued and making the Top Ten! It helped that he gained the one thing that was denied him in the US - radio play, with the BBC in particular getting behind him. The interest in Tom Lehrer has never really diminished, even though he hasn't toured since the early 1960s and didn't release anything officially for more than thirty years! Songs By Tom Lehrer shows just how sharp a mind he had.

This is an unnecessary (but legal) pirate issue of the original 1953 Transradio/Lehrer/Decca Records studio recordings of the first set of songs. If you must have these original studio recordings (instead of what I feel are the superior concert recordings with intros and audience reactions) you would be much better off with getting a copy of the authorized reissue on Rhino/WEA "Songs and More Songs by Tom Lehrer". Only slightly more expensive, it contains BOTH sets of songs (although Rhino didn't use the stereo master tape that exists of the studio recordings of the second set of songs.) The Rhino CD also contains the four recordings Lehrer made with an orchestral accompaniment and his recently recorded "missing" song "I Got It From Agnes".

As children my brother and I lived in Paris in the 1950's and we did not have television. My Dad had a reel to reel tape recorder and one of the tapes was this compilation by Tom Lehrer. We used to listen to this all the time. For the last 50 years these parodies rang over and over in my head. One day I decided to see if Amazon had a copy and they did! I ordered it and sang along with it with joy and memories of my childhood. I surprised my brother with it and we laughed at how we still remembered the words.
