Songs of the free marks the point where Gang of Four were able to merge their hard-edged guitar sound with a bigger production which afforded space for the bass and vocal to breathe. The music sounds much more ambitious than before - a sound which would continue on Hard. The punk elements of their previous work are shaken off here and there are clear pop-structures behind most of the songs. The guitar work is outstanding throughout - buy this album for Call Me Up alone.

Much has written about the seminal debut album Entertainment and I agree with most of it. However when push comes to shove the lazy music press, DJs etc ignore the more daring and interesting tracks (which actually do use influeneces from other musical genres like Dub, funk etc) and play the straight 4/4 scratchy punk of Damaged Goods. For me Ether, Anthrax and Not Great Men are far more interesting.

Anyway, on to SOTF(ignoring the difficult but ultimately rewarding Solid Gold in between) which was the first GO4 album I bought. It boasts a far richer mix of ideas and for me represents GO4 at their creative peak. Sara Lee's sparse and beautifully placed bass parts against Gill's soaring guitars provide a heady mix. "I Love a Man in a Uniform" should have been top ten. "Of the Instant" is quite beautiful. "History of the World" is the most exciting thing they committed to vinyl and the opening line of "When I was in my mother's womb, social structure seemed a simple thing" is reason alone to invest in SOTF! Shame the superb b-side of Uniform isn't here but I guess that's just the World at Fault.

Appearances can be deceptive-- while it seems the aggression has fallen by the wayside, there's still plenty of power in the lyrics. The band, however, seems a little uncertain. The sound is more spacious-- it seems that this style of music heavily influenced a host of Australian bands in the 1980s. At times, this album can be boring. But-- strangely-- it's not a total waste of time, because after all, it IS Gang Of Four. It's an 'interesting' album.
