5.0 out of 5 stars soulful and miserable, 19 Feb 2003

Think Nick Cave with a soul tenor. Philip Kane has a quite marvellous voice. Warm, mellow and woody, with the soul inflections of an Al Green, the yearning of Robert Wyatt. But it's in the lyrics that these tales of loss and redemption really get you. What other singer would come up with the line, "I'm sorry I said, when I p***ed in your bed, it was your fault for keeping me drinking." These ten songs have infected my stereo and my heart, bleeding onto the carpet making tear stained pools on my living room floor. If only Mark Eitzel was still capable of writing like this I wouldn't have to change allegiance.

4.0 out of 5 stars ................................with angst, 16 Feb 2003

This review is from: Songs for Swinging Lovers (Audio CD)
I've seen Philip Kane and his band a couple of times. I then got hold of a couple of sampler CDs, and the music plus the sleeve notes really caught my interest. I would liken Phil to the late Michael Hutchence. With an amazing voice, he can soar and swoop, with bags of emotion. The first track refers to an experience in Bangkok, where a lady boy and Gloria Estophan were involved!! Most of the songs seem to relate to very personal experiences, and expose the innermost feelings related to those experiences. Lyrically, Phil has the knack of injecting a measure of humour into the depths of tragedy. Seemingly, some of the experiences followed excesses of alcohol, and some illegal substances. All in all, the album is well produced, the band is tight, and the songs are very listenable. A worthwhile purchase, in my view.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not swing, 1 Mar 2004
This review is from: Songs for Swinging Lovers (Audio CD)
This is a good CD, although the title may mislead. It is not swing music. Nor is for lovey dovey lovers. Buit it is soulful, tuneful, and wonderful. The music industry should do much more to develop and promote artists like Phil Kane.
