Pete Seeger had a long and productive career as a folk song leader and social activist.

In 1938, he settled in New York City and eventually met Alan Lomax, Woody Guthrie, Aunt Molly Jackson, Lead Belly and others. Many of this group of musicians eventually formed the Almanac Singers in late 1940. The group performed for gatherings, picket lines, and any place they could lend their voices ... A few things to note 26 April 2013
By Severus Martin Bernice - Published on
    Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The music contained within this disc might be dated but is nevertheless an important thread in the development of folk music as a means to express political views. Of course anyone interested in the Lincoln Battalion and the Spanish Civil War should consider these recordings (along with those contained in the companion Vol. 2) essential.

The CD consists of a mixture of reworked American and Spanish traditional folk tunes and original compositions...all with the theme centered around the fight to save the Spanish Republic. As a result, there is a strong leftist, and at times communist, flavor to the songs which is to be expected given the subject matter.

The songs, mostly ballads and reels with some marches thrown into the mix, are in English, Spanish, and German (only the first three tunes are in English). They were originally recorded as early as 1938 and released in album form in 1961 which is the source used for the CD. The sound quality is what you might expect from such a transfer...obviously not 21st century clarity. Still, the surface sounds don't get in the way of enjoying the music.

Although Pete Seeger gets the Amazon billing as the performer on the disc, he only appears on the first six tracks. The remaining six cuts are by the German singer, Ernst Busch with a chorus and are sung in either German or Spanish.

My reasons for dropping this CD down a star or two center around production issues. First and foremost, this recording is a "CD Made On Demand" (CDMOD) which is sort of a euphemism for the fact that you're getting a CD-R and not a full blown CD.

Secondly, the liner notes for this record are excellent...unfortunately they're not included with the disc. To obtain the notes, you must go to the Smithsonian Folkways website and download them in PDF.

Finally, and perhaps most critically, the packaging is poorly designed and rather shoddy. The disc is unprotected and tucked away inside a gatefold sleeve and must be removed from its housing in a right-to-left manner which will almost ensure damage down the road...I strongly urge you to put the disc in a separate jewel case as soon as you take it out of the sleeve.

I purchased my first Folkways album over fifty years ago, and the packaging was pretty cheap looking back then. Nothing has changed for the better here. The cover looks like it was printed on a home color ink-jet, and as a result, the song listing is a little blurred and difficult to read.

Personally, these drawbacks are outweighed by the value of having these recordings in my collection. Nevertheless, I think that others who have a greater concern for such matters should be apprised of these facts.

It must be noted Smithsonian Folkways is a nonprofit record label and deserves to be commended for preserving these recordings and making them available to the general public. Given the nature of the economic times and the low demand for this type of material, their cost-cutting production model is understandable. They should, however, redesign the sleeve to make the disc more accessible.

One final note, although I find this music priceless, there are those who might balk at paying the Amazon price of over $20 for what amounts to under thirty-two minutes of music.

Canciones de la memoria 3 Nov. 2009

This should be an album to be part of any Spanish History class. Specially in Spain where the "Memoria histórica" is now alive and making available a revision of our past that is necessary and well over due. The Spain that was sacrificed, embodied by all its victims of both bands, is the object of this album's wonderful homage to mankind and human solidarity. Thanks to the Smithsonian for rescuing the Songs for Democracy in these days where it is still at stake and so much taken for granted.

PS: Amazon, would be possible to access the accompanied text that was printed with the CD? Thanks!
