Product Description

It's an album that has grown in stature every year. It was a concept album a decade before concept albums were supposedly invented. It was a folk revival album before the folk first revival, before the second folk revival or the most recent folk revival. It's not just one of the great albums of the Fifties – it's one of the greatest albums of all time. It's the Everly Brothers' 'Songs Our Daddy Taught Us.' Fifty-five years after the Everlys recorded 'Songs Our Daddy Taught Us,' Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day and jazz chanteuse Norah Jones teamed up to do every song on the album in the classic Everly style. Now BEAR FAMILY – the world's premier archive label places another twist on that classic LP. BEAR FAMILY is not just reissuing the original Everly Brothers LP on CD in pristine audio, but fleshing out with a second CD with early or original versions of the songs that the Everlys learned from their father – 'Songs Our Daddy Learned.' So a revealing album now becomes doubly revealing. Hear this music as it emerged from the hills of Appalachia in the early twentieth century. Then hear the Everly Brothers' versions. And then hear Billy Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones. It's a journey like no other through the roots of American music – and American music is really, truly the music of the world.

What a great idea. The original Everly Brothers album on disc one, And early versions of all the songs by both well known and Obscure artists on the other. The Everly Brothers album was years ahead of it's time and could have been released today in the Americana market. I never knew that the Brothers recorded it because they were going to Warner Brothers and owed Cadence an album . They wanted to leave a project that no singles could be issued from. ( Cadence released a couple anyway! ) This is one of the best reissues of the year in my opinion.

The fabulous Everly Brothers. 29 May 2014

This album by itself is great but to know the origins of this great music is even better. The late Merle Travis used to pick with the Everly Brothers father Ike. For a kid growing up in Ohio and saving quarters to buy 45s as they came off a juke box The Everly Brothers were the best and with the loss of Phil Everly those harmonies are now gone forever. Glad I kept my 45s.

Songs That Live On 15 Mar. 2014

This couldn't have come at a better time: On the heels of the Foreverly CD and the loss of Phil Everly comes the resurrection of the Everlys' historic original packaged with a compilation of the recordings that inspired SODTU. These songs led to the Kingston Trio, Dylan and Baez. Little wonder that Dylan called The Everly Brothers "the ones who started it all."
Could've been better 4 May 2014

Never one of Don and Phil's strongest albums, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us is rumored to be a final contractual obligation to Cadence the content of which was selected to avoid competition with the Everly Brothers output on their new label, WB. Interest in this album has been driven by Norah and Billy Joe's recent recreation Foreverly a harmonically beautiful, impeccably recorded dirge. This outing of the original on Bear Family - which has far more "soul" than the recreation- also adds a CD with original recordings that Don and Phil's Daddy probably used to teach the brothers. None of these tracks is especailly interesting while the annotation is surprisingly poor given the usual high standards of Bear Family.

Not as good as I remember them. A super fan might enjoy. I Like other albums of theirs much better.
