Essential Folk Pick--4 Stars

No extravagant posturing...the music is largely beautiful, if melancholic, and that's enough to justify the project. -- Mojo Magazine, April 2004

Fascinating...Kudos to everyone involved for putting together this historical and brilliant collection of songs. A+ -- Scene Magazine (Ontario, Canada), September 2003

Pays loving tribute....Folk and roots music aficionados will appreciate this disc, as well Nueva Cancion enthusiasts. -- San Antonio Current, 2/19/04

Remarkable...If you buy any CD this year, make it this one. -- The John Shelton Ivany Top 21 (USA), September 2003

4.0 out of 5 stars Spain in my Heart 24 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
A collection of songs to pluck at the heart strings of all those with a sense of history, especially the history of the anti-fascist stugggle in the 30's and even more so of the part played in that struggle by the progressive men and women of Spain and their allies in the International Brigades. I would have liked to hear more songs sung in their original language ie Spanish & German and the CD is a tad 'American' but that apart, a great collection and well worth buying and listening to with a glass of red wine in your han.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps Alive the Spirit of Justice and Freedom 5 Aug 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As the son of a British International Brigades veteran and a Spanish Republican refugee,I grew up with the pain of betrayal, defeat, and exile. Songs helped to sustain us through the long dark years of Franco's dictatorship. This record captures the emotion, joy, and beauty of many of those songs, as well as some new ones, and keeps alive the spirit which took thousands of volunteers from around the world to fight for justice and freedom in Spain. - Jim Jump

As the horrors of the Syrian civil war unfold day by day, it was timely to receive this collection of songs from another civil war that erupted in Europe in July 1936 when General Franco's army tried to overthrow the duly elected republican government of Spain. Although the rebellion was initially unsuccessful, German troop transports ferried a rebel army by air from Morocco to Spain and soon Madrid itself was under siege by armies supported by Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. The Western democracies, Britain, France and the United States, shirked their duty to send the Republic supplies which provided an opening for the Communists to organize and send to Spain the International Brigades to fight fascism. It is to these iconic fighters, especially the Abraham Lincoln battalion of the 15th International Brigade, that this album is dedicated. The collection is introduced by Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie (Woody's son). Seeger divulges the fact that when he went to Spain after Franco's death to sing some of these songs, he found that the Spanish knew them only from his records and sang his versions, so strict was Franco's dictatorship. The songs are wonderful, some sung in Spanish and some in English, by artists as varied as Uxiá, Quetzal (a group from East LA), most of whom are unfamiliar to me. Some of the songs have a mordant humor, such as Si me quieres escrebir, in which a young militia man imagines being welcomed at an inn by one of Franco's Moors and offered a meal of exploding hand grenades and machine guns, to despair in Viva la Quince Brigada, in which it is admitted that the Loyalists have no aircraft or cannon and are outmatched by the rebels. 3.0 out of 5 stars La música bien, la letra no tanto 2 May 2005
By Rodrigo de Oyarzabal - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD

These stirring songs from the noble fight against Franco's facism are still important today. Sung in Spanish, English, or both, these songs honor the Fifteenth International Brigade and their brave allies and celebrate the spirit of freedom. The same struggle continues today in places like Chiapas. La Lucha continua.
