In the wake of the 1980s comedy boom that made casual obscenity and bodily functions safe for TV, a listen to these '50s classics from a piano-playing Harvard grad student with a thin singing voice sounds tame, if not quaint. Yet Lehrer's first two self-produced albums, among the first generation of comedy LPs, remain beloved gems of musical parody, and noteworthy for their original success in an era when their topics were strictly taboo for broadcast media. He kids Cold War paranoia ("We Will All Go Together When We Go"), sends up then-hip folk revivalists with a cheerful murder ballad ("The Irish Ballad"), and gets laughs out of incest ("Oedipus Rex"), drugs ("The Old Dope Peddler"), and racism ("I Wanna Go Back to Dixie"). Closer to Gilbert & Sullivan (whom he in fact raids for one melody) than Def Comedy Jams, Lehrer can still raise a modern frisson when he plays necrophilia as romance ("I hold your hand in mine dear, I press it to my lips/ I take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips..."). --Sam Sutherland

A "Must Have" for every lover of musical satire!,

Desipte owning all three of Mr Lehrers analogue recordings, buying this CD was an unavoidable compulsion! The passage of time has served merely to enhance the genius of this old master of muscial satire. If you are over 45 and you enjoyed Michael Flanders & Donald Swann or Gerard Hoffnung, then this CD is DEFINITELY for you. Once you have heard this CD, you will probably want to buy the latest Lehrer re-creation: "The Remains of Tom Lehrer" apparently on Rhino records, but alas not yet available in UK.

The New York Times commented that "Lehrer's muse in not inhibited by such factors as taste" and the acerbic nature of his lyrics have not dimmed over the thirty years since the music was originally written. His songs are hysterically funny and the wit as caustic as ever.All I can suggest is; buy it, play it and see.

this is an excellent album - it had me laughing out loud and i'm still discovering new funny bits as i listen to it again. obviously the elements song is a must for any science teacher, which is why i bought the cd, but there's much more to it than just that song. the only odd thing is the repeated songs on the second half. but which album should i get next?
