Product Description

Album Description

Jazz singer Winstone has a lissome voice, agile and expressive, and she's a fine improviser, besides. Well known for her wordless improvisations, she is a great interpreter of lyrics and composed melody.

One of the UK's most important female jazz vocalists (Best Vocalist BBC Jazz Awards 2001),Norma's career began in the 1960s when she performed with Mike Westbrook, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs and John Taylor. John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Winstone formed the group Azymuth in the 1970s and recorded several albums for ECM. Winstone then recorded a solo album with ECM and was also featured on Kenny Wheeler's 'Music for Large & Small Ensembles'.

On 'Songs & Lullabies' Winstone and pianist Fred Hersch perform 11 compositions by Hersch with lyrics by Winstone. Norma Winstone is an ideal lyricist for Hersch's lavish melodies and her improvisations flow perfectly with Hersch's music. Vibist Gary Burton guests on three tracks, adding texture and light.

Personnel:
Norma Winstone - (voice), Fred Hersch - (piano), Gary Burton - (vibes, tracks 3,6,10)

Great 'Jazz Art Song' 20 April 2003
By E. C Goodstein - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album is stellar IMO. Winstone has quietly been doing some
great work for the last 20 odd years in various contexts. Here
you really get a showcase for her lyric writing skill, and she responds. Hersch's instrumentals are a bit more 'lyrical' than
John Taylor of Azimuth, or even Kenny Wheeler, but no less
interesting. If there's not quite the stunning centerpiece of "A Timeless Place" ("The Peacocks"), as a total ensemble these are
great songs, great melodies and brilliantly done. Norma is also singing more warmly now than her early years. Full marks too
for including Gary Burton on three tracks. Rewards repeated, or even continous listening IMO.

Outstanding ! 8 July 2007
By Rainer Noch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Fred Hersch exclusively plays his own great music and performs with the great voice of Norma Winstone. Both instruments - the lyric piano and the warm, a high technical level reaching, voice - do fit perfectly to each other. I have seldom heard a CD, where the piano and the voice fill so many harmonies, that other instruments (bass, drums) are not really needed. Especially the performance of the piece "The Eighth Deadly Sin (The Eleventh Hour)" is breath-taking. My recommendation: Strong buy !
