Format:Audio CD
Built very much around Helen's talents as a jazz singer she has no problem dealing with the scores that might have challenged her modern contempories at that time. This CD defines a modern approach to swing singing. The four tracks set against the sole horn of Ben Webster are simply beautiful, particularly her rendering of `Imagination'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure quality jazz vocals 11 April 2013
By Mr G
Format:Audio CD
I became interested in Helen Humes many years ago but hadn't re-investigated her catalogue until recently. This stunning album is testament to her superb interpretive skills and effortless swing. One inestimable advantage of this set is some incredibly stylish charts by West Coast giant Marty Paich, who complements her style perfectly. Humes tackles some great songs here, including the rare but gorgeous "Every Now and Then". She also delivers the definitive performance of one of her stapes, "If I Could be with You" (a very fine song). Anyway in sum I just love this album and Miss Humes takes her place in the pantheon of the greatest jazz singers, easily ranking with Fitzgerald, O'Day et al.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ex-Basie singer is bound to swing 28 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD
Whilst listening to Count Basie I grew to love Helen Humes but this CD is much later and is about songs she to chose for herself to sing, a large band of incredable musicians accompanies her, Marty Paich did the arrangements and you can't ask for better than that. The songs most of which are well known vary over a wide range including an amusing "Million Dollar Secret" which she wrote. Count Basie hired her to replace Billy Holiday in 1938 which may give some idea of her quality if not her style, by 1960 when this was recorded her voice was not quite as strong but still delightful.
