Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

They might hail from the idyllic Aberystwyth in the heart of West Wales, but Murry the Hump's Songs of Ignorance in no way evokes the whimsical, eccentric air of mysticism that hung in the air like sweet dope smoke around the debut records from Gorky's Zygotic Mynci or Super Furry Animals. No, despite a passion for the dynamic of glam rock and the occasional countrified slide guitar, this is a thoroughly modern, exceedingly British record--far more in the spirit of Pulp's "Do You Remember the First Time" than any wistful nostalgic foray into musical yesteryear. This is largely down to Murry the Hump's incredibly charismatic, exceedingly lanky lead singer Matt Evans--a songwriter with all the wry charm of his self-confessed lyrical hero, Hefner's Darren Hayman. Take the unashamedly sentimental love song "Booze and Cigarettes", which breaks hearts with beautifully simplistic allegory ("You fill my spleen with nicotine") or the slightly goofy charm of "Green Green Grass"--a song about scoring Class Bs with a helplessly grin-inducing opening couplet: "My dealer drives a three-wheeler / Lives in a house by the side of the sea". Thankfully, for all their arch-eyebrowed humour, Murry the Hump write such pretty, affecting music that it's no trial to take this glorious debut seriously. "Songs of Ignorance"? It's bliss. -- Louis Pattison

For fans of the singles, this may dissapoint a bit. I was totally taken with the single versions of Green Green Grass of Home, Colouring Book and Cracking Up. The album version are re-recorded, mixed, and felt. Gone is some of the glam and rock leanings, with a stronger bent towards the acoustic and country side. Murry was still a great band, but many of the re-workings seem under-thought and unfinished. A sad farewell.

And its sounding pretty damn good. We've waited so long, seen so many live performances in pubs around aber, but finally we get to hear the likes of New Deal on record. Starting off with the familiars of Green green grass of home and cracking up is a great idea, before the beauty of thrown like a stone hits you. The standout track for me is new deal, always a favourite live, and the only disappointment was colouring book which is a poor version.

Sheer beauty 15 Dec 2006

I can only say that, after having listened to their songs for five years, I finally bought their only album just to discover how excellent they really were. In fact Murry the Hump possessed the combination of gleeful tunes and warm optimism that is lacking from most contemporary music. Just music for music's sake, which makes this cd refreshing and pure. It's a pity they disbanded, due to what I believe was their lack of success. Keep watching out for The Keys, their legitimate successors. Anyone who hasn't bought this album should really try getting it. It is warm, sunny britpop with a welsh edge that keeps you singing along all the way. In fewer words: get it, love it, share it.
