Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Songs for the Front Row collects the best tracks from the Moseley Shoals quartet Ocean Colour Scene. Though critics may not like this smart, soulful Birmingham outfit, there's no denying that OCS--like the early work of their mentor Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher in his less boisterous moments, the Small Faces or the Yardbirds--manage to tap into a certain strain of Englishness usually ignored by trendier outfits. It's all here: from the Chris Evans-championed "The Riverboat Song", to festival favourites such as "Profit in Peace", the irresistibly jaunty "Mechanical Wonder" and the Stonesy blues of "You've Got It Bad". Every groove oozes passion and self-belief, every last Motown-influenced bassline and Mod blast of guitar boasts pride. Derided as this Moseley Shoals quartet may well be--and sure, their music can veer worryingly into syrupy ballad territory, particularly on slower numbers such as "Beautiful Thing"--they've had their great moments. --Everett True

This is great collection of solid songs from a band who have been greatly ignored in the music world. With a reputation for being boring and hanging off every word Paul Weller says OCS where shunted to the back of the class when Britpop was king and nearly forgotten when it imploded.
But this is a band of great quality both lyrically and musically. The Riverboat Song may forever be tainted by the association with one C.Evans but Hundred Mile High City, Day we Caught the Train, Travellers Tune, July, Huckelberry Grove are great tunes. The live version of 'Robin Hood' is fantastic.
But for me the highlight of this is the limited edition live CD which showcases OCS's talents in the live arena, on 'Profit in Peace' when the crowd sing back at the band 'We don't wanna fight no more' there is real sense of occassion and the epic nature of 'Get Away' is given real justice as it here spread over 9 minutes. 'Hundred Mile High City' just sounds amazing.
Overall a great cd that is improved by the live element.

Finally the band have put all their best onto one cracking greatest hit album. The album opens with the well known riff of the excellent riverboat song, continuing with the best songs off Mosley Shoals, Marchin' Already, One From The Modern and Mechanical Wonder. The limited edition version has some great performances and shows the band at their live best. The highlight has to be the little known Robin Hood live at the Albert Hall. All the songs here are fans favourites and real highlight songs of the last 10 years. A must buy for Ocean Colour Scene fans and fans of indie.

Fantastic! 9 May 2002

From one of the most underrated bands in the past decade comes a great album. Every single track is brilliant. You have some old anthems, Riverboat Song (TFI theme tune), and The Day We Caught the Train, and some really melodic beautiful tunes, Beautiful Thing. The booklet itself is a treat, with a comment from the band about every song, and what it means to them. Basically fantastic - a must buy for you die hard indie fans out there!
