Product Description

Product Description

Never underestimate the power of music to capture human emotion and raise the human spirit. The proof is in this stirring collection. These sixty songs from the two world wars of the twentieth century capture the longing for peace and home by soldiers so very far from either. But they also demonstrate humanity's capacity to find humour even in the darkest hours, and its readiness to work together, to sing together, for the greater good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A celebration of recordings 1914-1945... 20 Jan 2014
Songs from the war years, A celebration in music, DAY3CD053

This new 3 CD compilation comprising 60 vintage performances now on the One Day Music label is a very nostalgic experience and covers the period 1914 to 1945. The sound quality captures the atmosphere of the originals very well and in terms of the musical styles we progress from songs with a Edwardian sound through to the swing era of the Second World War. There are also plenty of uplifting novelty numbers.

CD1 has recordings from 1914-1918 (6); 1930-1938 (3); 1939-1943 (11).
CD2 has recordings from 1914-1918 (5); 1920s (2); 1939-1944 (13).
CD3 has recordings from 1914-1918 (5); 1920-1937 (3); 1939-1945(12).

Many well known names appear amongst the credits as do the names of artists I was not familiar with. Nora Bayes, (1880 – 1928) American singer, comedienne and actress of the early 20th century. Of great interest is the following historical information...

On April 11, 2006, under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, Nora Bayes was added to the National Recording Registry. The citation stated that she was...
Inextricably associated in popular imagination with World War I... a former member of the Ziegfeld Follies, an extremely popular vaudevillian and a Broadway star, she recorded a number of other songs to boost morale during the war and performed extensively for the soldiers.

Lale Andersen...(1905 – 1972) was a German chanson singer-songwriter born in Bremerhaven, Germany. She is best known for her interpretation of the song "Lili Marleen" in 1939, which became tremendously popular on both sides during the Second World War.

Not what I had hoped for. Unable to sing along as a group in the residential home.
