Fantastic film. Images are much more detailed and varied compared with Live in London. Also the sound is great. The sketchmovie Behind the Stage, filmed by his daughter I believe, is very interesting and illuminating with interviews of the band members, their devotion to LC, the little anointment ceremony, images of the grand old man wearing spectacles, rehearsing in solitude, singing The Partisan with a stubbled face, adding highly to the expression of the lyrics. It's all wonderful stuff!!! Don't miss it!

Leonard Cohen had not had a tour since the early 1990s, enjoying a retirement of sorts from the toil of public performances. Due to monetary issues not of his own doing, he struck back out on the road and performed over 150 dates during extended world touring in 2008 and 2009. Returning to rave reviews, attending one of the concerts was akin to a spiritual experience for many fans. Old in body but young in spirit, the 75-year-old singer's commitment to the shows seemed a parting gift to fans for a lifetime of devotion and admiration.

Did you get a chance to see him perform from the front rows on the world tour at a good venue? Fortunately I was able to attend several shows and enjoy the experience firsthand, but if you did not get the chance, do not despair. Watching this Blu-ray is as close a perfect document of the show as any concert I have seen in high-definition. A remarkably tasteful and restrained edit of various concert performances, twelve songs were picked to showcase on the BD for their power and intensity, which are exactly the same ones found on the CD and DVD package. Image quality is inconsistent from song to song, as each venue posed their own unique challenges for capturing to HD video. In conjunction with the magic of the music though, it fully captures what it was like to attend one of the shows from a premium seat. The intimate filming style zooms in on Cohen's face as he sings, allowing one to catch the slightest details. What brand of microphone he is using as he sings, or the fact that he had a very scruffy beard at the concert in Helsinki, Finland for The Partisan. Other angles fare less well in terms of resolution and clarity, but the camera rarely strays from the singer outside of the solo instrumentals.

This is a superb blu-ray, though initially I had some reservations about it. I saw Leonard Cohen in concert in Sligo, Ireland, in July 2010, and the show was incredible - magical, inspirational - he was so gracious, giving and responsive to the audience and he seemed in very good form. When I first watched this production, he seemed more exhausted and worn-out and less participatory that he seemed on that night in Sligo. This took some of the magic out of watching him. I understand he did collapse during this tour of 2008-2009 and his physical state, as well as the physical state of the backing singers, doesn't seem so good. Admittedly this was a very long tour and must have taken a lot out of them, and that night in Sligo in 2010 was the very start of a new tour. He played for over 3.5 hours and danced on and off the stage for the encores. The backing singers were all upbeat, energetic and engaged with the crowd. The crowd were alive with enthusiasm, unlike some of the crowds shown in this video which look more sedate (though none-the-less still very appreciative). So this video is lacking some of the energy which I experienced at the live gig.
The other reservation I first had was that most of the tracks selected in this production are down-tempo and not the most well-known or initially striking.
However I have come to love this production, despite those reservations. The music is sublime, the performances from all the musicians are excellent, the production and sound quality is very good, and there are moments which still move me to tears here. So without a doubt it gets 5 stars from me. I would very much like to see the release of some of those moments from Lissadell house in Sligo on July 31st though - now that would be a great treat!

I already have the O2 Arena DVD from Leonard Cohen. I read the reviews of others about this Blue Ray DVD of "Extras" from various concerts most of which were good. Both the sound and vision are far superior to the tracks from the O2 DVD as you would expect from Blue Ray. My hope now is that Columbia will re-release the O2 concert in Blue Ray, hopefully soon and not to wait for Leonard's demise, he is after all 79. I certainly will be at the front of the queue to upgrade my standard DVD to Blue Ray.

This is really a demo disc for how good blu-ray can be.
It is a bit short thou. Absolutely worth buying if you like L C.
