If you have never heard any material from the 'Flowers before, this is an ideal place to start. I bought this album years ago & it lives in my CD player! This album is classy, sassy & very, very catchy. Although their sound is organic & earthy, pitched somewhere between James and The Waterboys, it is all tied together by Liam O'Maonlai strong vocal performance (esp. on This Is it, and One Tongue). Lyrically the band veer very close to Neil Finn of Crowded House, and all the songs sound as if they would be at equally at home in the biggest stadium or between the sheets of your bed! Even on the faster numbers the band pull off it off with a touch of magic:- Check out Thing Of Beauty & Isn't It Amazing. This is the sound of a band nearing perfection, a trick that Hothouse Flowers may never repeat.

This is truly amazing. Their best by far and an absolute classic. One of my top ten albums (better than the Joshua Tree - just).
Try Isn't it Amazing for a song that must be dedicated to the wonder of songs that are like prayers. Thing of Beauty for a lucious guitar rift and great vocal, Gypsy Fair for a light tough with a sing along chorus and Stand beside Me for a religous song that I, as a non believer, love
Cannot recommend this album enough. Buy it

HotHouse Flowers have allways been a great band. This album can bring tears to your eyes. Songs from the rain isnt simply a album that you will listen to only once. It rivals World Party (and i thought that couldnt be done !!). The tracks that will have your mind in a trance and head lost. Try the title track and Gypsy fair.
I know people allways write good reviews about albums they like and have got, but if just by chance you come across this group, buy it then buy the first two albums and watch what happens.
This music makes the world just that little bit better.

This album is a perfect advert for the quality of the Hothouse Flowers music. Liam O'Maonlai's vocal talents are expertly displayed on the standout track An Emotional Time. It is worth buying the album for this track alone, a haunting song which captures the band at their best. The rest of the album does not quite reach the same Olympian heights, but it is still a damn fine album and one which any Hothouse Flowers fan must have. Quite simply a must-have track for those who appreciate fine music.

You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate this album. (I'm not one, anyway.) Okay, nice bit of singing here, controlled passion, spiritual stuff, it goes along at a nice steady pace, good music for driving. Favourite tracks are 'Thing of Beauty' and 'Isn't it Amazing'. Yes, I suppose a bit of a Crowded House sort of sound; also very much an Irish 'wavelength'. You could make a good compilation tape mixing these guys with U2, The Waterboys, and Van Morrison. Think I might just go and do that...

I bought this album over a decade ago and it is simply one of the best albums ever. Everyone who hears it buys it the next day. What makes the album brilliant? A good question; every song is superb and the album has a "flow" to it. It suprises me how many people have never heard of this album. All I can say is , buy it and you wont regret it.

I had had this album on audio tape back in the early 1990's and wanted to replace it on Cd, in my opinion this is Hot House Flowers at their best... I really love this album
