Clarity and Presence 10 Aug 2005
By James McGrath - Published on
Format: Paperback
The first volume of poetry produced by David Whyte, this is a book I discovered only after reading his later work. It is fascinating and instructive to see the man at the beginning of his apprenticeship, already possessing the clear vision and understated articulation in these pages that underlies his later bigger narrative poems. Many of the pieces are tight almost ritualistic exercises in attention and presence. Horses Moving on the Snow, Light Over Water. Sound Over Water. The eye and the ear refreshed and steadied by reading them at one and the same time. In the Opening of Eyes you find a glimpse of his future style, that clear imagery beginning to be wedded to insight. An economical, understated, unprepossessing little jewel of a book.

not as good as whyte's later poetry [for me] 14 Aug 2010

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This selection of Whyte's poems is clearly early; not as distilled and powerful as his later work. My favourite collection is still House of Belonging!

Haunting and beautifully written. David Whyte's work provides a window to the edge of life. Worth more than a cursory read.
