Damn it all to hell! You know my weakness for an edgy female singer / songwriter, who dips in and out of rock, folk and roots music, so what do you do? You only go and send me one of the finest such releases I've heard in aeons, knowing full well I'll end up like a slavering stalker.
Gits.

And so it has proven to be with Baltimore born, New Jersey based, New York gigging Amy Speace. Album number two is coming out on Judy Collins Wildflower label and sees Ms Speace firing out a bakers dozen of heartfelt, soul stirring, uplifting and crashing back down again songs, half of which (in a righteous world) would be acclaimed in the streets with, perhaps, an array of banners and balloons.

Among those half dozen would be the killer ballads 'Shed This Skin' and 'Make Me Lonely Again', the more sprightly 'The Real Thing' and 'Double Wide Trailer'. And let's not forget about the duet 'Two', sung with The Jayhawks' Gary Louris. Every one of those is an absolute peach. Which isn't to say that the rest are mince, for they still outshine most new tunes I hear. She's got an ace band of musicians (the aptly named
Tearjerks) together and there's also an unspecified male harmony singer who pops in to make some telling contributions.

Generally, it's the ballads where she comes into her own, as Ms Speace knows how to rip your heart out and shred it to pieces with the aforementioned Make Me Lonely Again', an absolute killer. The less said about the Blondie cover the better, but that's one misstep in 13, so we'll let it slide (and program it out). The best of the rockers is probably 'Not The Heartless Kind' which has some mighty fine slide guitar to keep it going.

An album that made me a very happy man, and which has been on constant rotation over the last couple of weeks. If you have any semblance of taste, you should be nipping off around about now and getting your very own copy.

Made a better impression on me than any other support act for Ian Hunter in 38 years of following the great man. CD played almost to destruction since I bought it on the tour, not a weak track on it and to cap it all she's a lovely lass with lots of time for fans.

Check her out next time she's over here, booked for Glasto in summer and touring with her band while here which includes James Mastro from Ian Hunters band, you will not be disappointed.

HASH(0x963d9c90) out of 5 stars Smart songwriter, beautiful voice 23 May 2006
By Lauri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a great CD. Amy has a lovely voice, and the songs are clever and witty. It is hard to classify the genre - it ranges from folk to rock, with a little bit of twang thrown in for good measure. I love the opening track, Step out of the Shade, but it's the tongue-in-cheek Double Wide Trailer that gets stuck in my head all the time. Real Thing is the best girls' song since the days of Helen Reddy and Gloria Gaynor. I would definitely recommend this CD.

HASH(0x96a67d38) out of 5 stars A star on the horizon 6 July 2006

Amy's voice is better than ever; she has a command of ranges that can be awesome. Her lyrics reach the heart and make the listener hear the story. She is witty and sassy in The Real Thing, sentimental with feeling in Two, and Double Wide is just a great song to have fun with the crowd. She's a winner.

HASH(0x9692bf6c) out of 5 stars Great talent and CD 2 April 2007

I saw Amy Speace twice in Harrisburg PA and she's a very good songwriter and performer. She has a beautiful voice. I'm basically a classic rock fan, but lately I've started enjoying some new country music and I really like this artist. Go hear her if you have a chance.
HASH(0x96c3a510) out of 5 stars I love Amys CD Songs for Bright Street 10 April 2015

I love Amys CD Songs for Bright Street. She writes excellent lyrics and has an amazing, earthy voice. This is perhaps her earliest CD, and she was accompanied by a band. My favorite song on this CD is Row, Row Row, and is performed as a male/female relationship duet. It is the most powerful presentation of this well written song, and it fascinates me. It appears that Amy has moved away from band back-up after this CD. I hope that over time, she returns to using the Duet style for some of her songs. Sadly, this CD is not at present uploaded for digital tracks on Amazon.

HASH(0x963db834) out of 5 stars Amy is the Real Thing 3 Sept. 2006
By Cherylann C. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD's songs resonate long after listening to them. It is especially great for long road trips. Amy writes words and music that reflect and touch the Amercan spirit. She inspires us to take risks with Step Out of the Shade and motivates women to be the real thing in a song by that name. Some may call her style americana, folk, or singer-songwriter, but I just know she is the best of all worlds and is one to watch (and listen to) as she rises in the future music scene.
