In just over a year, soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums went from the living room to the main stage. The recipe for meteoric success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ.

4.0 out of 5 stars A soundtrack for heartbreak 12 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
The brilliantly named Fitz & the Tantrums are a 6-piece band from Los Angeles, fronted by the Cruella Deville-haired Michael Fitzpatrick (Fitz). The rest of the band consist of a highly talented vocalist called Noelle Scaggs whose sound is straight of the 1960's soul scene and a variety of instrumentalists who are masters of their respective crafts. Fitz & the Tantrums sound is largely derived from their use of classical instruments, most notably the church organ, coupled with heartbreak lyrics. Songs for a Break Up is a soulful and melancholy collection of songs dictating the crushing depths and re-emergent hope that one goes through after a break-up.

Kicking off with the up-tempo and invigorating "Breaking the Chains of Love" recounting the initial denial of losing someone simultaneously demonstrating the full sound of the band as Scaggs harmonises the chorus to a symphony of horns and organ riffs. Moving onto "Don't Gotta Work it Out" animated by a punchy-piano baseline we encounter the inevitable arguing of reconciliation and the anger. "Darkest Street" is the low point of the album as the protagonist succumbs to the melancholy and is resultantly a very slow paced tune and surprisingly faceless, definitely the actual and the metaphoric nadir. "Winds of Change" is the start of the recovery and Scaggs' harmony is incredible, doing what she does best and is a highly infectious tune that was recently used on an HTC advert in the United States, a prominent and catchy harmony coupled with punchy lyrics that is sure to stick in your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to Pickin' Up The Pieces... 25 July 2011
By G. S. Pouliot - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I realize Songs for a Breakup was released prior to the band's full album, but I imagine most listeners will be more familiar with their studio songs and are now purchasing this. Although there are some repeats, the two songs that didn't carry over to Pickin' Up The Pieces are definitely worth a download. Recorded in Fitz's living room, this album's acoustics are reminiscent of an older time or a live recording. The two novel songs (Darkest Street and We Don't Need Love Songs) are slower but heartfelt and really great. Must Buy for Fitz fans!

This group definitely deserves a listen. They have a bit of a throwback sound, harkening to the days of the Four Seasons, the Four Tops, the Supremes, and so on. Some great, catchy tunes in this one.

My favorite is We Don't Need No Love Songs! A soul full cry...

Check out the Palladia Cable channel if you want to see Fitz and the Tantrums in action. They recorded the Chicago show and they are awesome!

I play this CD in the car all the time as it is fun to listen to and gets my feet to tapping. If the feet don't tap then I don't buy. Keep going Fitz and the Tantrums and I look forward to getting more of their music.
