My actual rating is 3 1/2 stars - I know these artists are serious in their efforts. I am a huge fan of the new wave of modern choral music issuing from the shores of the Baltic Sea, and so I had great hope for this production. It's okay, but not up to the standards and content of other recent recordings. This music lacks the profound beauty and inspiring mysticism of most modern Baltic composition. Frankly, much of it reminded me of Soviet era choral work, what I refer to as propaganda cantatas. The singers sound a bit over their heads, and there is a certain lack of "crispness" in the productions. Still, I did moderately enjoy these recordings and they are worth a listen or few - perhaps they will grow on me. Despite this CD's title, this is not a good sampling of modern Baltic choral music. For that, see Baltic Exchange, Passion and Resurrection (Esenvalds), or collections of works by Miskinis, particularly the Royal Holloways production.
