Product Description

Product Description

Launched in 2008, the Songlines Music Awards celebrate and acknowledge the myriad of musical talents across the world, featured in Songlines magazine. Former winners include Anoushka Shankar, Tinariwen, Fatoumata Diawara and Goran Bregovic. Voted by readers of Songlines and the general public, there are four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Newcomer; the nominees are the top four in each category from the public vote. This compilation album, exclusively available from Amazon, features all 16 nominated artists in the 2013 awards and 'is a perfect taster of what's cooking in the world right now' says Simon Broughton, Songlines editor in chief. The Songlines Music Awards 2013 winners' concert, featuring performances from all four winners, will take place at London's Barbican on Friday December 13, 2013. For more details, visit http://www.songlinesmusicawards.com

As usual, the world music magazine's annual poll produces a satisfyingly offbeat mix of nominees. --Clive Davis in The Sunday Times

If there's any unifying theme to this excellent compilation it's that world music - or better, the music of the world - is in fine eclectic shape. From the joyous Afro-fusion of Zimbabwean rising stars Mokommba to the rambunctious English folk of Bellowhead and the cool-headed Ethiopian jazz of pianist Samuel Yirga, the album's 16 tracks highlight why the artists featured have been shortlisted for Songlines magazine's annual awards. --Jane Cornwell in the London Evening Standard

It's good to have a compilation that brings together Zimbabwe's excellent Mokoomba with the inventive Katy Carr, with a song from her concept set about the Polish forces in the second world war. Then there's the globally influenced French band Lo'Jo, Dub Colossus, Sam Lee (who surely ought to have won a Folk award) and Ravi Shankar, recorded a year before his death. --Robin Denselow in The Guardian

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value 1 May 2013
By Skunk
Format:Audio CD
I buy this cd every year, and there are always some great tracks on it ( like the cd on each issue of Songlines) but this year was unbelievably good value too, as it normally costs £8+! Good move!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summary of current world music. 10 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have only recently become a reader of the excellent world music magazine, Songlines, and enjoy the excellent CDs that come with each issue. This album is at a marvellous bargain price and its sixteen tracks a good intro to world music.
