5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music 19 Dec 2002
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent album. If you like flamenco and african music you should listen to it. Even you have never tried this type of music before you should have a go. It is a perfect fusion between flamenco, african and modern music. Some of the music is really inspiring.
I cannot understand why this record is not available anymore. If someone from the record company read this, please make the record available again.

5.0 out of 5 stars invigorating 12 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
an absolute must for me, with dazzling guitar flamenco which any player will be stunned by, and the instantly recognisable double bass of the best player ever Danny Thompson...combined with Kora player Toumani Diabate.. this is a stunning collection of tracks with energy to spare..have had this album on cassette for years and worn it out in various cars,,, but really must get it on CD now that time and cars have moved on.. ha ha...fabulous mix of african and spanish music with energetic rythyms and that authentic 'cafe' atmosphere...if you listen to Noches en Vela on the Nitin Sawhney CD Philtre that also is an example of the type of music you can hear on this work.. it transports you to a high energy spain/africa mix that lifts moods and sparks up your day !

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 2 April 2002
By William Wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Take one double bass player(Danny Thompson ex Pentangle no less)one Kora player(Toumani Diabate)and a Flamenco group(the wonderful Ketama)and put them all in one room and you will have something very special. It was sad indeed to find no reviews of this fabulous recording so I will TRY and do it some justice .So many attempts at mixing different types of "world " music end up in a hodge podge of sounds and styles that satisfy no one and merely dilute the source, but this is the real deal. The overiding feeling of this disc is PLEASURE...the musicians involved are obviously swimming in the delights of the music they are creating, the discoveries they are making about themselves and their music.
This disparate band somehow produces a seamless and invigorating stream of music that will take you to places even they never dreamed of.

5.0 out of 5 stars profound and powerful, this music POPS! 7 Mar 2012
By motlalekhotso - Published on Amazon.com
This album is fabulous . . . but very hard to describe. Let me try to capture its power and beauty by what it is not.

1. It is certainly not some lazy "fusion" or "world" music where some fading yet privileged pop star discovers struggling artists and throws together some silly empty little album.

2. At the same time, it isn't purely ANYTHING. There's plenty of profound influence from the strings and rhythms of Mali, but the flamenco flow is powerful too.

3. Finally and most emphatically, it's not something to just throw on in the background and let play without thought. It sounded great the first time and even better the third or fourth time, played straight through.

If you are interested in masterful strings and modern music influenced by ancient traditions, listen to this album!
