From the Publisher

Songbuilder: The Life and Music of Guy Clark
Using the words of Guy Clark, his wife Susanna, and friends like Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett, Nick Evans and Jeff Horne paint a moving portrait of one of the great singer/songwriters of the age.

From the Back Cover

It seems unlikely that Texas songwriter Guy Clark will ever attain the widespread public recognition that his extraordinary talent deserves, but 'Songbuilder', using the words of Clark himself, his wife Susanna, and many of their friends and colleagues, movingly shows how this creative, compassionate writer has developed throughout his long career.

Nick Evans and Jeff Horne delve into the background of the man who has inspired a generation of young American singer-songwriters, from Lyle Lovett to Michelle Shocked, and discover his own influences and the fascinating stories behind many of his classic songs and recordings.

In the book, tribute is paid to Guy Clark by his contemporaries:

"Guy is just consistently brilliant, and continues to write great songs that are immediately memorable... he's extraordinary at writing wonderful fiction with incredible stories and characters. He's a great role model and a wonderful pal." - Nanci Griffith

"He has tremendous insight, and it comes from who he is and the way he looks at life... it's not just a matter of making things rhyme and being clever, there has to be something else going on there that stands the test of time. Guy is a true poet and a great American writer." - Emmylou Harris

"Guy's a great gentleman and a true craftsman. He puts the art of songwriting on a higher level, and makes everybody try a little harder." - Jerry Jeff Walker

Nick Evans and Jeff Horne are themselves musicians, who for many years have played in bands performing the songs of Guy Clark and others such as Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen, John Prine and Nanci Griffith. Some of these will be featured in further books in our 'Come From The Heart' series on great North American songwriters.

From an outsiders stand point this is a horrible book. It is nothing more than an over-fed magazine article. Nick Evans and the other guy make far too many references to themselves and what they think about Guy's music, when they should have been telling the indepth story of how a kid from Monahans Texas went on to become country musics answer to gershwin. I was insulted by the method they chose to explore the life of one of the most talented song writers of all time.
However, despite the fact that they butchered the story, it is still a very important book for every Guy Clark fan to have, simply because its the only out there. If you are a fan of this type of music, check out "Hardcore Troubadour", about steve earle. It is very well writen.
Guy Clark has led a very interesting and eventful life, which has touched the lives of scores of people. His life could have made an excellent book, but Evans and company failed to deliver. Maybe someone else will get it right. I give this book three stars, but two of them come from the subject matter alone.

With respect to the other reviewer I found this book to be an excellent read. Nick Evans and Jeff Horne were two British country performers who both loved Guy's work. They noticed how many other American country artists cited Guy's influence and decided to investigate that influence for themselves.

The book is both informative and enlightening. They make their case and approach the book with the express desire to examine Guy's work and his worldwide influence on songwriters and performers, including themselves, which is an integral part of the book. It was never meant to be a standard biography and given their limited resources of time and distance (although they made the journey to Nashville and shared time and music with the great man) it is a miracle that the book exists in the first place. As stated, it is the only book on Guy Clarke, to American writer's shame. It took two British musician's with a mutual love, respect and passion for Guy's work to give birth to this book and that is to their eternal credit.
