She becomes a music hall star both in her native town and in the south, after an appearance in the theatre at Brighton. But, from a very young age she has been in love with a young man, an ambitious shoemaker in her home town, and when he becomes engaged to someone else Poppy is devastated. She disappears, but her best friend - a composer and pianist who has helped her in her singing career - sends messages and words of love through his music which gradually help her to overcome her misery.

This is the second book i've read by Valerie Wood and i'm so impressed with this Author,i've just ordered another three of her books.I can't praise this book highly enough. It's a beautifully touching story that brings the characters to life. You are drawn into the story and feel you are back in time with everything brought vividly to life.Valerie is the winner of the Catherine Cookson Prize and her work is very much in that style.Recommended to all.
